About Oundle School
Founded in 1556, Oundle School is one of Britain’s leading co-educational independent schools with a full-boarding ethos, situated in the charming countryside market town of Oundle, Northamptonshire. It is home to 840 boarders and 300 day pupils, all supported by 150 passionate and inspiring teachers. Travel from London is under an hour by train.
Why study with us
At Oundle School, we run a hub for a national subject-specific School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme, known as the National Mathematics and Physics SCITT. The course leads to qualified teacher status with a PGCE. We offer placements at a range of local partner schools, as well as a small number at Oundle. Oundle School has a highly successful physics department, which sits within the school’s SciTec campus. The science department has excellent resources for practical work and it boasts state-of-the-art facilities.
Training and development
The SCITT approach is different to traditional teacher training in the following ways:
- Trainees spend the majority of their time on placement in two different schools.
- Trainees receive a tax-free bursary of £27,000 or scholarship of £29,000 (subject to eligibility) from the Department of Education, and can take out a student loan if required to cover the tuition fee of £9250.
- Training focused on physics teaching is led by specialists in the teaching of this subject.
Graduate schemes
Our focus at Oundle is to help address the national shortage of physics teachers through the National Maths and Physics SCITT programme, a partnership between both maintained and independent schools. Once the trainees have completed the course, we continue to help them to find employment by preparing them for applications and interviews. All of those who have trained at Oundle have secured employment after the scheme, quite often at one of their placement schools.
What we are looking for
We are seeking to recruit high-quality graduates, from those who are graduating this year to career changers with a good degree in either physics or a related subject. There is no age criteria – we are simply looking for people who are passionate about physics. The best trainees are those who are committed to working with young people and who want to inspire the next generation. If you think you can be a reflective practitioner, we would love to hear from you.
