IST profile imageThe Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) is a PhD-granting research institution dedicated to cutting-edge research in mathematical and physical sciences, life sciences, and information and system sciences. The campus of IST Austria is located close to Vienna, one of the most livable cities in the world.

Why study with us
IST Austria offers an international and interdisciplinary research environment with English as the working language, state-of-the-art facilities, and scientific support services. Given the international character of the research environment, we foster diversity and equality.

Our PhD programme is characterized by modern comprehensive training with a special focus on interdisciplinarity. Students work closely with outstanding faculty within small research groups.

A postdoc position gives you, as an early-career scientist, the chance to grow professionally. IST Austria allows you to focus on what is most important during this time: doing fundamental research at the highest possible level.

Training and development
PhD students receive support through our mentorship and career-development programmes, which focus on training in transferable skills for academia and beyond. They also receive financial support to attend scientific conferences and workshops during their studies. Postdocs interact closely with colleagues from different fields through joint projects and events, and develop the skills necessary for their next career steps through career-development training
and workshops.

What we are looking for
We welcome students with a Bachelor’s or a Master’s in science to apply for our PhD programme.

Highly qualified candidates who have recently completed their PhD or equivalent in the natural or computer sciences, mathematics, or any related discipline are eligible to apply for a full-time postdoctoral position at IST Austria.

Assistant professors receive independent group-leader positions with an initial contract of six years.

Candidates for tenured professor positions are distinguished scientists in their respective research fields.
