Assistant Professor of Physics

Department of Physics & Engineering Physics

Central Connecticut State University invites applications to join the Department of Physics & Engineering Physics as an Assistant Professor of Physics. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Physics and contribute actively and effectively to service, research, and student growth.

About CCSU’s Department of Physics & Engineering Physics

The department offers comprehensive programs in physics leading to a Bachelor of Science in Physics with concentrations in Engineering Physics, Biomolecular Sciences, Biology, and Finance, and a BSED in Physics Education. Departmental research areas in physics include laser radar and optical atmospheric studies, Materials research including Liquid Crystals, and materials for Energy storage systems such as high energy density batteries and supercapacitors.

Position Profile

We seek an experimental physicist with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching of both physics majors and non-majors, with research area appropriate for undergraduate participation at CCSU and a strong commitment to involving undergraduates in research, mentoring majors, and a commitment to helping to grow enrollment of physics majors and to building contacts with industry. Candidates are expected to be committed to multiculturalism and working with a diverse student body.

Applicant Evaluative Criteria

Applicant profiles and supplementary materials will be evaluated for appointment based on the following:


  • Ph.D. in Experimental Physics/Applied Physics

Experience and Training:

  • Undergraduate teaching experience
  • Research interests appropriate for undergraduate student participation.
  • Commitment to serving culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse communities.

Ideal Candidate


  • Evidence of scholarly activity including research experience involving undergraduates.
  • Research experience in optics/photonics, optical instrument design/development.
  • Ability to teach introductory courses for majors and non-majors, undergraduate upper-level courses such as Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, Modern Physics, and Quantum Mechanics.
  • Ability to involve undergraduates in research.
  • Ability to build research collaboration with current department faculty.
  • Industrial or Postdoctoral experience is a plus.

Compensation and Employee Benefits

In accordance with the Connecticut State University American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Collective Bargaining Union Contract, compensation for this position is at the rank of Assistant Professor for 2023-2024.
