We’re looking for a computer science, mathematics, physics or engineering graduate or post-graduate who can join our small team of internationally-leading engineers and scientists, working at the forefront of applied nuclear and particle physics.

As a small team, we need someone who proactively thinks ahead to solve computational problems and is keen to learn from the wider expertise in the team. The environment is fast-paced so one week you may need to be delivering contract research, and another delivering a long-term research project and key capability for the company.

This is an opportunity to influence and work in a company that is scaling and you have the potential to take significant responsibility in our muon imaging projects, and expect to work daily with senior people in the company, who can support and provide mentorship to you as needed, to present your work to international engineering clients and to undertake muon data studies on client sites (potentially from Aberdeen to Abu Dhabi).

Role Description

Title: Computational Cosmic Ray Geophysical Engineer

Geoptic is open to appointments at graduate and post-graduate career stages.

Reporting to: Managing Director

Hours: 37.5 hours, 9am-5.30pm

Location: The position is based in the main office and laboratories in South Warnborough (RG29).

Off-site national and international travel may be required to customer meetings and trials. Additional payments and flexible working hours are also offered for overnight muon survey working.

About Geoptic

Geoptic specializes in instrumentation to measure natural background radiation (called cosmic rays), turning these measurements into key decision-forming information for its clients. The types of projects undertaken include cosmic ray surveys of railway tunnels, design and build of bespoke instrumentation, and computational simulations

Role Description, Duties and Responsibilities

This role is focused on delivering scientific simulations and analysis using Geoptic’s bespoke particle transport and analysis code. The role is a key member of the team, delivering critical interpretation of Geoptic’s data to projects and customers that often result in influential outcomes for Geoptic and its partners.

From guiding advances in instrumentation supported to assessing the condition of clients’ engineering structures, you will be become familiar with measurements and simulations of the cosmic ray muon flux. The role also supports instrumental trials and client surveys through the timely analysis of survey data and on-site direction.

You are expected to already be proficient in scientific programming and software practices, in particular using in Python and C++. Experience of GEANT4 Monte-Carlo particle transport codes is highly desirable, and we’re looking for an aptitude in picking up new and established libraries to achieve your calculational goal as needed.

The essential role requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or a related field;
  • Strong proficiency in Python, related scientific packages (e.g. numpy, scipy, pandas, dash libraries), and scientific workflows (e.g. using Jupyter);
  • Knowledge and experience of C++ and associated libraries (e.g. STL and boost);
  • Awareness of DevOps processes and tools (e.g., Git, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, Ansible);
  • Awareness of software testing (e.g. unit, integration, regression);
  • Familiarity with the Linux operating system and bash scripting;
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills and a good mathematical background;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team environment; mixing with people from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines;
  • A positive approach to their work and working with others are essential.

Key responsibilities & duties

  • Conduct and deliver research outcomes using new simulation techniques, algorithms and technologies;
  • Delivery of high quality results on technical projects;
  • Development and support of early career scientific staff;
  • Project simulation lead and coordination activities;
  • Technical support to Geoptic’s survey and technology development programmes;
  • Data analysis using Python or C++ and scientific processing and plotting libraries;
  • An understanding of radiation detection techniques and technologies;
  • Working in small scientific/engineering teams;
  • A considerate and safe approach to their work, following the company’s health and safety processes and policy;
  • Technical report writing, able to answer the ‘so what?’ question for Geoptic’s customers and alter this messaging as affected by medium;
  • Demonstrable experience of a high standard of presentation of scientific studies and their results in verbal and written forms.

Academic & trades qualifications

  • A Masters or PhD in a scientific or engineering-related subject is required. The membership of a related professional body is very welcome and strongly encouraged.

We provide geotechnical muon services to the civil engineering sector. Our novel technique is based on the measurement of a harmless form of background radiation. The technology is able to see through many tens of metres of soil and rock, or equivalent materials, in order to identify regions of anomalous density.
