GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world‘s largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.

The Nuclear Reaction Division is responsible for setting up and performing experiments at the Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams (R3B) setup, within the Nuclear Structure Astrophysics and Reactions (NUSTAR) GSI/FAIR scientific pillar. The experiment, being one of the largest installations within NUSTAR, will be served by the novel Super-FRS secondary beam facility at FAIR, forming an overall experimental setup of more than 100m length.

The advanced Data Acquisition (DAQ) system for NUSTAR/R3B has been developed over the last deca- des from a few hundreds of channels in one Cave to a distributed system with about a factor of 1000 more channels, outlined in the NUSTAR DAQ Technical Design Report. The international collaboration runs complex detector systems being served by the Data Acquisition System attached to tiered storage and an associated controls framework based on EPICS. The reaction setup in a nuclear physics context requires picosecond timing combined with high rate capability and high energy resolution. Key ingre- dients are the software and user support on site, the integration of novel systems into the general data acquisition & controls framework and the support necessary for the quality control of data taken in experiments. Main analysis interfaces are UCESB coupled to R3B-Root being maintained by the collaboration and GSIs IT division. Soft- and Hardware- developments are typically carried out within the international collaboration.

The operation and maintenance of these systems should be overseen by an (Senior) “Data Acquisition Scientist R&D” (all genders) to be hired as soon as possible.

You can expect to work in a concise local team embedded in a large international collaboration of about 250 highly skilled and qualified scientists and engineers on all levels. You will receive a comprehensive introduction and internal training.

Your tasks:

  • Operation, Maintenance and Development of the existing Data Acquisition, Controls, Storage Ecosystem;
  • Assist detector groups in the design of their systems, joint development or specifications;
  • Interface to the local Electronics and Detector laboratories and the IT department;
  • Integration of novel detectors with their electronics;
  • Development of firmware, data acquisition and data analysis software;
  • Installation and commissioning support of various detector groups in the experiments of the collaboration;
  • Maintenance and repair of existing and new systems;
  • Support of collaborators (students, post-doctoral, staff) before, during and after the experiment.

Your profile:

  • A PhD in physics, electronics, information technology or equivalent;
  • Experience with complex data acquisition hard- and/or software;
  • Experience with time measurements with nano- or picosecond time-precision, ideally in particle-astroparticle or nuclear physics experiments;
  • Experience in spectroscopy and associated electronics challenges with a variety of detectors based on different materials;
  • Experience in the programming of microcontrollers and data acquisition/analysis systems using C, shell scripts, Python, etc.;
  • Experience in large scale control frameworks (e.g. EPICS);
  • Experience in analysis frameworks such as Root (FairRoot or R3B-Root would be an asset);
  • Experience or interest in the implementing complex digital designs in modern FPGAs would be a bonus;
  • Knowledge in the setup and installation of Linux based or similar operation systems and related networking;
  • Fluent in English (good German language skills are an advantage).

We offer a permanent position in an international environment.

Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
