The CNRS LAPP (Laboratoire d’Annecy de Physique des Particules) institute is opening a post-doctoral researcher position for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship on DUNE, a long baseline neutrino experiment. The position aims at the development of reconstruction tools for low-energy analysis, along with hardware activities associated with the charge readout planes of DUNE. Position and Main Responsibilities

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next-generation neutrino oscillation experiment being constructed in the United States. A beam of neutrinos will be generated at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) and directed towards massive detectors filled with liquid argon, situated in a mine 1300 km away at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota. DUNE will leverage the neutrino beam, a deep underground location, and large-scale detectors to facilitate a comprehensive scientific program addressing some of the most fundamental questions in particle physics. Among these, the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe will be explored through the measurement of the CP phase in the neutrino sector. The DUNE physics program also encompasses precise measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters such as Δm²₂₁, which are accessible through the observation of solar neutrinos.

The Laboratoire d’Annecy de Physique des Particules (LAPP) plays a major role in the development and construction of the DUNE vertical drift detectors. LAPP has contributed extensively to the design, development, and optimization of the charge detection systems known as Charge Readout Planes (CRPs). Each CRP unit comprises 2 PCBs with 4 metallized layers. Several CRP prototypes have undergone successful testing at CERN in recent years. This technology enables detailed reconstruction of neutrino interactions within the detectors. Additionally, LAPP is involved in the development of reconstruction software utilized for the analysis of data from the prototypes and in the simulation of the signal formation in the detection planes.

The new postdoctoral position is anticipated to play a central role in this project through engagement with LAPP's neutrino group activities. LAPP DUNE group, consisting of four permanent staff physicists and several PhD students, contributes to various facets of the DUNE program. This includes design and construction of CRPs, mechanical structure and tools for CRPs installation, development of simulation and reconstruction software for physics and performance studies.

The successful candidate will contribute to the LAr detector development efforts at LAPP and engage in enhancing reconstruction of signals using data from DUNE prototypes. These efforts will prioritize the study of charge detection and reconstruction for low-energy events. The goal being to evaluate, study, and characterize low-energy backgrounds in order to develop methods to mitigate it. Given Annecy's proximity to CERN, the candidate will be engaged in all aspects of the project. They will contribute to experiment preparation, participate in detector construction, commissioning, and onsite operation. Other activities within the DUNE program may also be considered based on the expertise of the selected candidate.


- Physics: good knowledge of particle physics analysis and event reconstruction.

- Technical skills: programming in C++, Julia, Python and/or ROOT is required; experience with DUNE software tools is a bonus.

- Language: Fluency in written and spoken English, speaking French is a bonus.

- Team work spirit is more than welcome.

- The candidates must have a maximum of 3 years of research experience after the PhD.

LAPP is a laboratory of the Institute of Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics (IN2P3), an institute of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), which coordinates programs in these fields. LAPP is a joint research unit (UMR 5814) of the CNRS and the University of Savoie Mont-Blanc (USMB). More than 150 researchers, teacher-researchers, engineers, technicians, administrators, students and foreign visitors work there. The research carried out at LAPP aims to study the physics of elementary particles and their fundamental interactions, as well as to explore their links with the great structures of the Universe. The work of the LAPP teams aims, among other things, to understand the origin of the mass of particles, to unravel the mystery of dark matter or to determine what happened to the anti-matter present in our universe at the time of the Big Bang.

LAPP is a dynamic lab located 50-km away from CERN, where the detector prototypes of DUNE are hosted. The LAPP DUNE team (4 physicists, 3 PhD students, 4 engineers) mostly works on CRP related activities, reconstruction tools and several physics analyses are being developed.
