Job Description

We have an opening for a Health Physicist in the Radiation Protection Functional Area. In this role, you will provide advanced health physics (HP) support to ensure radiation safety programs at LLNL are effective and compliant. This position will also provide solutions to complex HP issues/problems and provide support and guidance to ES&H Team radiological control personnel (e.g., health physicists, technicians) in the area of field operations. This position is in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate and reports to the LLNL Radiological Control Manager.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Evaluate and provide HP input on radiation safety policies and procedures. Help draft, review, and maintain related institutional documents and other contents.
  • Conduct assessments and audits necessary to comply with applicable regulatory requirements. Support audits, inspections and site verifications by internal and external entities.
  • Act as the point of contact (POC) and alternate POC, as assigned, for radiation protection program functional elements (e.g., contamination control, posting and labeling, radiation generating device, etc.). Assist in the development and maintenance of associated program documents and processes.
  • Provide guidance and clarification on a diverse range of moderate to complex issues and answer radiation safety program implementation questions from field radiological control personnel on matters related to HP field operations.
  • Respond to radiological emergencies and incidents on site. Participate in event investigations and make recommendations to all levels of management to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide periodic support to Programmatic field operations.
  • Contribute to the development and presentation of selected training courses in radiation safety (or related topics).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level

  • Provide solutions to complex HP issues/problems where ambiguity exists around techniques and approaches. Solutions require in-depth analysis of multiple tangible and intangible factors. Solution path is typically not known ahead of time. Use independent judgment to accomplish objectives.
  • Act as the primary expert and routinely interact with professional colleagues, internal senior management, and sponsor organizations across and outside the Laboratory on advanced HP technical areas and projects/programs.
  • Apply innovative methods to streamline processes and advance radiation protection methods at the laboratory.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Physics, or Radiation Protection or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience in operational health physics engaged in the monitoring of personnel and work environments, or a related field with knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations and other consensus standards.
  • Experience with preparing technical reports or participating in and/or conducting radiation safety audits and inspections.
  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow through.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing projects, and meeting schedules.
  • Analytical, decision-making and problem-solving skills to effectively solve moderate to complex problems.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and explain technical or operational information.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level

  • Experience in a facility engaged in the monitoring of personnel and work environments, or a related field with advanced knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations and other consensus standards.
  • Advanced experience with preparing technical reports; participating in and/or conducting radiation safety audits and inspections.
  • Significant experience leading independent health physics work, reviewing new health and safety standards, and providing technical direction and/or leadership to health and safety staff on health physics-related matters.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s or higher degree in Health Physics, or another closely-related technical area.
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.
