PHD position in theoretical high-intensity laser-matter interactions

Quebec, Canada
Posting live until
23 Jun 2024

Our group presently has two PhD positions in theoretical high-intensity laser-matter interactions. The research will be performed at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique - Centre Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications (INRS-EMT), 1650 blvd. Lionel-Boulet, Varennes (Québec), J3X 1P7, Canada. The PhD candidates will be part of the Advanced Laser Light Source (ALLS) laboratory, home of the most powerful laser in Canada with 750 TW of peak power and will work closely with a strong experimental group.

PhD description: The goal is to simulate numerically high-intensity laser-matter interactions for the optimization of particle acceleration and transport, and for the investigation of quantum electrodynamics effects. New numerical tools will be developed and combined with open source particle-in-cells and Monte Carlo codes. The numerical results obtained with these techniques will be used to design new experiments and to compare with existing experimental data. The PhD candidates will be given full access to High Performance Computing capabilities from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada to perform their numerical simulations.

Research Fields: relativistic laser-matter interactions, radiation physics, optics, photonics, charged particle acceleration and strong-field quantum electrodynamics.
