The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Bates College invites applications for a one-year full-time Visiting Assistant Professor to begin August, 2024. The search is open to theoretical, computational, observational, and experimental approaches to all subfields of physics and astronomy.  The successful candidate must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in a vigorous undergraduate program, have knowledge of/experience with inclusive pedagogy, and welcome the opportunity to mentor serious students and advise senior theses.  Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the success of historically underrepresented, marginalized and first-generation students are encouraged to apply.  The teaching load of the position is five courses per year (taught over two semesters and a four-week May Short Term).

Qualifications PhD in physics or related field.

Bates College is a highly selective liberal arts institution of approximately 1,750 students, located in Lewiston, Maine, 2.5 hours north of Boston, Massachusetts, and 1.0 hour north of Portland, Maine. Since its founding in 1855, Bates has been coeducational and has enrolled students of various religious and racial/ethnic groups. The college also has an accomplished faculty of approximately 200 individuals from a wide range of disciplines teaching in 24 departments and 8 interdisciplinary programs.
