The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Your responsibilities include:

Material analyses of medieval Torah scrolls as part of the joint project "Materialized Holiness: Torah scrolls as a codicological, theological and sociological phenomenon of Jewish written culture in the Diaspora" funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF):

  • Preparation of national and international measurement campaigns, if necessary, implementation of exploratory trips
  • Set up and calibration of mobile and transportable scientific measuring instruments (reflectography, X-ray fluorescence analysis, infrared spectroscopy)
  • Instrumental examination of Torah scrolls (writing inks and writing supports)
  • Evaluation and interpretation of the measurement results
  • Documentation, summary of the analytic findings in reports
  • Preparation of publications of the research results in the relevant specialist journals
  • Presentation of the research results (lectures, posters) at specialist conferences

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed university studies (diploma/master's degree) in the fields of chemistry, physics, archaeometry, materials science or similar with a PhD degree in one of these disciplines
  • Knowledge in the field of non-destructive analysis
  • Basic knowledge of X-ray fluorescence analysis, vibration spectroscopy and reflectography
  • Very good written and spoken English
  • Basic knowledge of German is required
  • Good communication and Information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, ability to work in a Team/willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn and flexibility
