Postdoc in Nano-Optoelectronics

At the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), we recently established a new research center, NanoPhoton – Center for Nanophotonics (, to perform fundamental and applied research on a newly discovered class of semiconductor nanostructures, termed dielectric bowtie cavities. These cavities confine light to spots in the nanometer range and open several new and previously unimagined possibilities within quantum and information technology.

In this project, we want to explore the bowtie cavity concept to address one of the most important and yet unsolved challenges in information technology, namely how to integrate photonics and electronics. Solving that problem could lead to a considerable speed-up of computers and interconnects and significant energy savings. However, progress is required in several research disciplines, including light-matter interaction in nanostructures, nanofabrication, nanoscale material characterisation, and modelling and design. NanoPhoton is enabled by a major center grant from the Danish National Research Foundation and gathers leading experts within all these disciplines from several Departments at DTU.  

Responsibilities and tasks

The postdoc will be responsible for analysing the fundamental properties of nanolasers and nanophotodetectors integrated with transistors. This includes establishing physical models for the devices and the interface and subsequent analysis using computer simulations and analytical techniques. Based on the insight obtained, the candidate will guide the design of actual structures to be fabricated in DTU's cleanroom. Depending on interest and background, the candidate may also contribute to the experimental characterisation of the fabricated devices.  


Candidates should have a PhD degree in physics or electrical engineering. In the selection of candidates, special consideration will be given to:

  • Expertise in nanoelectronics or nanophotonics.
  • Expertise in mathematical modelling and analysis of physical systems.
  • Experience in experimental characterisation of photonic or electrical devices.
  • A strong drive, interest in acquiring new skills, and a strong team spirit.
  • Good communication skills, including a track-record of publications in high-level journals within relevant fields.
  • Interest in the supervision of students.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is two years. The preferred starting date is 1 November 2021, or as soon as possible after that.
