4 PhD student positions in heavy-ion physics phenomenology

Job description

We are seeking talented and motivated students to fill four PhD positions at the University in Heidelberg to work in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion physics and search for collective phenomena in few-body systems, in collaboration with the ultra-cold-atom group. The positions are available immediately. They include phenomenology research within the ISOQUANT Collaborative Research Center [1] in close collaboration with the ALICE teams in Heidelberg [2] and at GSI-Darmstadt [3].

The four main topics of the research are

  • description of longitudinal dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (C06);
  • magnetic field investigation in heavy-ion collisions (C06);
  • hydrodynamic description of heavy quarks with the search for hydrodynamic attractors (A02);
  • Investigation of collective phenomena in strongly-interacting systems with small numbers of particles, such as proton-proton collisions and ultra-cold-atom experiments with a few fermions expanding in a spatially asymmetric trap (ABC).

    The research will be performed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Silvia Masciocchi (Uni Heidelberg and GSI), Dr. Ilya Selyuzhenkov (GSI), Dr. Andrea Dubla (GSI), and Dr. Federica Capellino (GSI), in a dynamic, team-oriented and collaborative environment.

    Your Qualification
    • Master of Science in Physics or equivalent degree to be obtained until the start of the contract. A minimum grade of 2.0 in the German system is one of the requirements for admission to the Heidelberg Graduate School for Fundamental Physics (HGSFP). Further details can be found in [5];
    • Knowledge of particle physics and basics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions;
    • Knowledge of statistics and strong interest in statistical data analysis;
    • Knowledge of machine learning and AI tools is an advantage;
    • Experience with object-oriented programming such as C++, Python or Julia, or with data analysis frameworks such as CERN ROOT is a plus;
    • Ability to work systematically and independently, as well as in a team;
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
