Job Details

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you a civil engineer with skills and proven experience in developing conceptual and preliminary designs for underground structures such as tunnels, caverns, and shafts? Are you able to work independently on high-value, technically complex civil engineering projects, collaborating closely with other disciplines to develop appropriate civil engineering solutions?

Join our motivated team developing the next generation of particle accelerators at CERN. As a civil engineer, you will be responsible for developing conceptual and preliminary designs for all underground structures associated with the Future Circular Collider (FCC) – a 91 km circumference machine to be housed in an underground complex up to 500 metres below ground in the Geneva Basin, the CERN’s next-generation particle accelerator currently in the Feasibility Study Phase.

Functions

As a civil engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Interfacing and collaborating with key stakeholders external to the civil engineering team, primarily final users, to identify and record all requirements;
  • Preparing cost-effective civil engineering proposals that meet identified requirements, considering full life-cycle costs, safety, and environmental impacts;
  • Overseeing and checking the work of internal designers responsible for technical drawings and models of underground civil engineering;
  • Analyzing site investigation data and contributing to decisions on the location and alignment of FCC civil engineering structures, including the main 91 km tunnel;
  • Developing conceptual designs, preliminary cost estimates, and construction schedules based on defined requirements, independently or with team members and external collaborators;
  • Managing contracts with external collaborators under the supervision of senior civil engineering team members;
  • Leading environmental impact assessments for FCC civil engineering, collaborating with external experts on carbon footprint assessments.

Qualifications

Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of in civil engineering and project management or a related field.

Experience:

We are looking for a civil engineer with:

  • Proven experience within fields of civil engineering such as tunnels, shafts, and caverns;
  • Proven experience working collaboratively with mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines;
  • Proven experience in writing technical documentation for civil engineering structures/facilities;
  • Proven experience in managing contracts for design and/or construction services for large civil engineering projects;
  • Experience in providing civil engineering services to a large-scale multidisciplinary science infrastructure project would be beneficial.

Technical competencies:

  • Design of underground structures;
  • Knowledge of underground structure construction;
  • Specification and follow-up of technical aspects of a contract.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations;
  • Solving problems: producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements Being open to original ideas and creative options by which to address issues; continually driving change by seeking new ways to improve outcomes;
