Pay Range
$132,810 - $170,556 Annually

Job Description
We have an opening for a Bioassay Scientist to provide moderately complex scientific and technical support for the Marshall Islands Program. The Marshall Islands program seeks to provide understanding of the long-term behavior of fallout radionuclide in coral atoll ecosystems, assess levels of human exposure, develop technical assistance and training programs, and improve understanding of radiological conditions in the Marshall Islands in support of remedial actions, island resettlement and resource development activities. The program currently operates one of the most inclusive and largest per-capita public Whole-Body Counting (WBC) Program in the world. You will be a part of the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry group/Marshall Island Program, in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division.
In this role you will:
- Play a lead role in managing the day-to-day operations of the Marshall Islands WBC and Indirect Radio-Bioassay Programs.
- Conduct quality assurance reviews of WBC spectra and update personnel databases (app. 1000 personnel records per year) with rigorous attention to detail.
- Ensure that the WBC program is being managed in compliance with Institution Review Board (IRB) protocols.
- Develop database listings, provide input for the LLNL Individual Monitoring Program website [https://marshallislands.llnl.gov/monitoring-programs/whole-body-counting/], validate dose calculations, and lead efforts to print and distribute Individual Dose Reports (IDRs) to volunteer participants.
- Provide mentorship and training for Marshallese technicians and students at LLNL and in the Marshall Islands. Develop procedural documents in both English and Marshallese.
- Support the daily operation and maintenance of radiometric counting systems at LLNL to include facilities upkeep, sample triage, calibration of detectors, sample archiving and implementation of quality assurance measures.
- Collaborate with scientists and IT personnel at LLNL in developing new and improved procedures and communication tools for implementing the WBC and Indirect Radio-Bioassay Programs in the Marshall Islands.
- Contribute to report writing, publications and website postings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, chemistry, physics or biology, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- 4+ years of demonstrated work experience using APEX and/or ABACOS 2000 Whole Body Counting software.
- Proficient in both written and spoken English and Marshallese.
- Proficient in the Microsoft software suite (word, excel, other).
- Basic knowledge of health physics and the radiological behavior of cesium-137 in the environment.
- Working knowledge of database recording and structures.

Security Clearance
This position requires either no security clearance, or a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level or Q-level clearance depending on the particular assignment.
If you are selected and a security clearance is required, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. L and Q-level clearances require U.S. citizenship.
If no security clearance is required, but your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check. (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)
Pre-Employment Drug Test
