Job summary
The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) delivers high-impact science for the UK’s defence, security and prosperity. In order to do this, we need self-motivated people who can apply their skills to ensure we are at the forefront of science. We work in niche areas which are sensitive in nature, operationally-critical to the UK and internationally recognised in importance.
Our Analytical Chemistry Capability is the UK’s centre of excellence for identification, quantification and attribution of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) in environmental and clinical samples.
We require a highly motivated and experienced analytical chemist, with proven leadership skills and with expertise in analysing proteins/peptides by mass spectrometry to help advance our capability to analyse toxins and related chemicals.
You will be part of the Analytical Chemistry Team and be responsible for leading small technical teams to deliver fundamental research and development of novel methodologies, conduct method validations and future exploitation of the methods for analysis of real world samples using liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and associated techniques (e.g. nano-LC). This also includes participation in national and international benchmarking exercises.
You will receive appropriate training to work safely and securely in our laboratories, within an ISO/IEC 17025 quality system.

Job description
In this role you will:
- Lead small teams in research and development to enhance Dstl’s capability for identification of toxins and related chemicals using protein/peptide mass spectrometry;
- Share knowledge and experience to nurture the team’s development;
- Be responsible for maintaining a suite of state of the art analytical chemistry instrumentation. Supplement this with new hardware and software as necessary, to provide cutting edge solutions to meet customer ambitions;
- Prepare new project proposals to meet customer requirements;
- Lead planning, delivery and reporting of research or method validations;
- Provide clear and timely communication, both written and verbal, on project outcomes to enable science and technology informed decisions for Dstl and its customers;
- Network with specialists internal and external to Dstl to seek out opportunities to boost innovation and delivery;
- Provide timely technical advice support to the team, projects and inform customer decision-making.
Person specification
We are looking for someone who has:
- Strong theoretical knowledge and practical experience in LC-HRMS of proteins/peptides;
- Knowledge of relevant data analysis/interpretation software such as Proteome Discoverer, Mascot or similar;
- Experience of method development and validation, ideally within a quality framework;
- The ability to critically analyse data and deliver research outputs that align with customer requirements;
- A passion for innovation and proven track record of research and development;
- Pride in their work and delivers to a high standard;
- Experience of successfully leading technical teams and meeting delivery milestones;
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team;
- The ability to adapt and flex approach to changes in customer priorities and high pressure environment;
- Continued drive to develop their personal and professional skills through training and mentorship;
- Experience of developing technical skills of less experienced staff through training and mentorship;
