Job Details
The Pulsed Power Physics Branch, Plasma Physics Division at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, DC advances applications driven by pulsed power technologies, relevant to the Departments of Defense and Energy. The Branch is a 26-member team of PhD physicists, engineers, and specialized pulsed power technicians. We develop high-energy pulsed power systems employing capacitive and inductive energy storage to generate intense high-power, charged particle beams. We provide some of the Nation’s technological basis for intense pulsed radiation sources, high-energy-density plasma experiments, and high-power switching, advancing applications of this technology to areas such as Nuclear Weapon Effects Simulation, Science-Based Stockpile Stewardship, Detection of Nuclear Materials, Electromagnetic Launchers, High-Powered Microwaves, and Inertial Confinement Fusion.
We have continuing and evolving needs for experimental plasma physicists, computational plasma physicists, pulsed power engineers, research scientists, current students, and interns. For all positions, demonstrated quality communication and writing skills, as well as interest and ability to work as a contributing team member. Satisfactory background check is required for initial employment and a security clearance is required for continued employment. Publications and an entrepreneurial attitude are valued in our organization.
Computational Plasma Physicist – with knowledge and experience in computationally-modeling physical aspects of pulsed power systems, electron-gas interactions, intense charged particle beam diodes, plasma radiation sources, dense plasma foci, validating simulations with experimental data. PhD in plasma physics or similar degree desired.
Company
Founded July 2, 1923, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is a scientific and engineering command dedicated to research that drives innovative advances for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. NRL is the Department of the Navy‘s corporate laboratory and reports to the Chief of Naval Research. As the Navy's corporate laboratory, NRL is the principal in-house component in the Office of Naval Research’s (ONR) effort to meet its science and technology responsibilities.
NRL has had a long and fruitful relationship with industry as a collaborator, contractor, and through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs). NRL values this linkage and continues to develop it. NRL is an important link in the Navy Research, Development, and Acquisition (RD&A) chain. Through NRL, the Navy has direct ties with sources of fundamental ideas in industry and the academic community throughout the world and provides an effective coupling point to the R&D chain for ONR.
