Job Details

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, http://www.lbl.gov/) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP, https: //atap.lbl.gov/) Division has an opening for a Research Scientist to work with the Superconducting Magnet Program (SMP, https://atap.lbl.gov/research/scientific-programs-and-centers/superconducting-magnet-program/).

The research in SMP is focused on the development of superconducting magnets for High Energy Physics (HEP), Fusion Energy Science (FES), Nuclear Science (NS) and medical applications. Also, the SMP is an integral part of DOE’s national Magnet Development Program (MDP), whose goal is to advance superconducting accelerator magnet technology for future colliders.

In this role, you will perform work within ATAP’s SMP program and focus on the design, fabrication and testing of superconducting magnets. The primary role will be designing and developing the next generation of superconducting magnets for nuclear science in high performance superconducting electron cyclotron resonance sources and for a high rigidity spectrometer project. Working collaboratively with ATAP scientists, engineers, postdoctoral scholars, technicians and students, document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed journals, oral presentations, and participate in meetings, conferences and reviews.

What You Will Do:

  • Support the SMP and other research efforts at LBNL by working to increase the performance of advanced superconducting magnets, implementing both Low (LTS) and High Temperature Superconductors HTS), for high-field applications, including both High Energy Physics (HEP), Fusion Energy Science (FES), Nuclear Science (NS) and medical applications;
  • Provide technical expertise and solutions in the magnet design, analysis, fabrication, and test area to support the magnet programs and other projects;
  • Provide expertise on conceptual and engineering design and fabrication of magnets components as well as on modeling techniques and guide;
  • Work independently, conducting independent research, towards specific goals of the SMP, and the US MDP;
  • Participate in research efforts to improve the performance of advanced superconducting magnets in close collaboration with universities, national laboratories, and industry partners;
  • Generate fundamental understanding of performance limiting factors in magnet technology and suggest methods to address these limitations;
  • Document and communicate the research in reports and oral presentations, including participation in conferences, and publication in refereed journals;
  • Mentor and supervise interns, students, and Postdocs;
  • Adhere to Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) policies and attend training classes as required and proactively promote and participate in our safety culture;
  • Adhere and promote IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability).

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. and or equivalent experience in Mathematics, Engineering, or Physics or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Less than 5 years of relevant experience;

Minimum of 2 years of work experience in two or more of the following areas:

  • Application of advanced modeling techniques applied to combined mechanical, magnetic, and thermal systems;
  • Application of FEA to superconducting magnet systems;
  • Experience with the design and fabrication of magnet systems;
  • Published record of research in magnet design and analysis;
  • Demonstrated publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results;
  • Knowledge of low and high temperature superconductors;
  • Knowledge of finite element simulations of superconductor magnets;
  • Knowledge of experimental and data analysis experience;
  • Knowledge of magnetics, structural mechanics, and thermal/cryogenic principles;
  • Knowledge of cryogenic systems and cryogenics;
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team environment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with all members of SMP including other scientists, postdocs, students, and technical support staff.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of 2D/3D CAD modeling and drawing creation • Knowledge of machining and fabrication methods.

Notes:

  • This is a full time 2 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs;
  • The full salary range of this position is between $7,624 to $18,297 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $10,165 to $12,198 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience plus also aligned with the internal peer group. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position;
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment;
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
