Job Details
The Max-Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy (MBI) conducts basic research in the field of nonlinear optics and ultrafast dynamics arising from the interaction of light with matter and pursues applications that emerge from this research. It develops and uses ultra-fast and ultra-intense lasers and laser-driven short-pulse light sources in a broad spectral range in combination with methods of nonlinear spectroscopy. With its research, MBI fulfills a national mission and is an integral part of the international scientific community.
MBI invites applications for
2 PhD students (m/f/d), 1 PostDoc (m/f/d)
for the experimental and theoretical investigation of ultrafast electronic processes in atoms, molecules and solids using all-attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy.
Job profile:
At the beginning of this year, we have demonstrated the first ever table-top all-attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (AATAS) experiment in our lab. In a new project within the Leibniz Collaborative Excellence funding programme we are aiming at studying the electronic processes evolving after the removal of an inner-shell electron by an attosecond pump pulse using a time-delayed attosecond probe pulse. The samples under investigation will range from atoms to molecules and solids with a focus on 2D materials.
A key point of this project is the close collaboration between experiments carried out in the group of Dr. Bernd Schütte and theory performed in the group of Prof. Sangeeta Sharma, with two of the advertised positions being focused on experimental work and one of the positions being focused on theoretical work. In addition, we have agreed to collaborate with the theory groups of Prof. Ángel Rubio (Max-Planck-Institut Hamburg), Prof. Vitali Averbukh (Imperial College London) and Prof. Přemysl Kolorenč (Charles University Prague). Regular online and in-person network meetings are envisioned.
The entire project will be realized in an optimal environment with respect not only to the existing infrastructure but also to the available experience and possibilities for national and international collaborations. This will provide the necessary basis for achieving essential results within shortest time as well as for their dissemination at international level.
Requirements:
We are looking for highly motivated and talented applicants.
- PhD position 1 (experimental): Master or diploma degree in physics, good knowledge in ultrafast laser physics, experience in attosecond physics and / or vacuum technology is beneficial;
- PhD position 2 (theoretical): Master or diploma degree in physics, good knowledge of density functional theory based calculations, experience in running Elk code (elk.sourceforge.io) or equivalent is beneficial;
- PostDoc (experimental): PhD in physics, experience in attosecond physics, pump-probe spectroscopy and absorption spectroscopy are highly desired.
Offer:
All positions are available immediately and initially limited to 3 years. The payment will be according to the German TVöD salary scheme for scientists in public research institutions (75% for PhD students, 100% for PostDoc).
MBI is an equal-opportunity employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply.
If equally qualified, severely handicapped persons are given preference.
MBI supports the reconcilability of family and working life and is certified by the audit workandfamily (audit berufundfamilie) as a family-friendly employer.
Please upload your application, including cover letter (specifying which position you are interested in), curriculum vitae, certificates and description of previous professional activities electronically via the MBI online recruiting platform at https://mbi-berlin.de/career. Review of applications will begin in October 2024 and continue until the position is filled.
For further information about the project, please contact Dr. Bernd Schütte (Bernd.Schuette@mbi-berlin.de) or Prof. Sangeeta Sharma (Sangeeta.Sharma@mbi-berlin.de).
Company
MBI conducts basic research in the field of nonlinear optics and ultrafast dynamics in the interaction of matter with laser light and pursues applications that emerge from this research. It develops and utilizes ultrashort and ultrafast lasers and laser-based short-pulse light sources in a wide spectral range in conjunction with nonlinear spectroscopy methods. The combined use of lasers with x-ray pulses from free electron lasers and synchrotrons complements this scientific program. With its research, MBI fulfills a nationwide mission and is an integral part of the international science community. It offers its facilities and its scientific know-how also to external researchers within the framework of an active guest programme. MBI is involved in various cooperative research projects with universities, other research institutions and industrial partners.
