Job Description
Your responsibilities
Foundation models are among the most powerful and promising new technologies in the field of Deep Learning and their applications to science is an active filed of research. Our group in CERN IT-FTI is studying the possibility to build a foundation model for particle physics, capable of understanding the behavior of particles inside a High Energy Physics detector and use the information to solve a range of tasks, that are relevant to High Energy Physics experimental data processing.
As a successful candidate you will work on transformer based architectures trained on calorimeters, detectors that measure particle data at collider experiments. You will investigate a range of methodologies, including self supervision, to achieve multi task capability while keeping at a minimum the amount of needed computational resources.
Your profile
Skills
- Excellent skills in Machine Learning and Deep Learning development frameworks such as PyTorch.
- Good knowledge in Deep learning models and architectures.
- Proven experience in developing, training and optimizing Deep Learning models.
- Knowledge of transformers based architectures is an advantage.
- Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.
Eligibility criteria:
- You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Data Science or Computer Science (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
- Applicants without University degree are not eligible.

About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
Company
At CERN, physicists and engineers use the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles – to probe the underlying structure of the universe.
