We are searching for a Research and Development Engineer to join our Fluids Research Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. The Department is part of the Fluid Dynamics Division within the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office, which has a long, successful history of providing innovative solutions and technology to a range of U.S. Government and Industry sponsors.
ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.
In this position, you will support and conduct basic and applied research in fluid mechanics, investigating a wide range of areas of hydrodynamics interest, including complex single and multi-phase flows, cavitating flows, marine vehicles, turbomachinery, and renewable energy production.
Responsibilities Include:

Prepare and execute hydrodynamic testing at ARL, government test facilities and field sites

Design, assemble & operate test articles
-
Reduce and analyze data
-
Write, develop, and submit proposals for funded research
-
Collaborate with other engineers, researchers and academic faculty
-
Document research activities in technical reports
Additional responsibilities may include:
-
Perform analytical and theoretical studies in the general field of fluid dynamics
-
Utilize advanced flow diagnostics / measurement techniques
-
Manage projects of small or moderate size and scope in experimental aerodynamics or fluid dynamics
-
Collaboratively develop, write and submit proposals for funded research

Develop and maintain external research relationships
This job will be filled at multiple levels. Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in an engineering or science related discipline; two year’s+ related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience for higher level jobs. This position will be filled as either Research Faculty or a Research and Development Engineer.

Knowledge of fluid mechanics

Good written and verbal communication and presentation skills

Ability to work effectively as part of a project team
Preferred skills and experience include includes:

A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

Experience in the design and execution of fluid dynamics experiments
-
Experience with advanced flow diagnostics/measurement techniques
-
Experience with systems engineering
-
Familiarity with solid modeling/CAD systems, MATLAB, or Simulink
Your working location will be hybrid on-site/work from home, located in State College, PA. Some off-site travel will be required and extended off-site work may be required.
