PhD Student Position in Physics for the ALICE Experiment
In the Department of Physics at the University of Jyväskylä's Faculty of Mathematics and Science, we are seeking a PhD student to join the ALICE Group . Our group is part of the ALICE collaboration at LHC and works closely with the department's QCD theory group. The position starts in January 2025 or as agreed.
The successful candidate will conduct data analysis within the ALICE Collaboration, focusing on the group's key research areas: two- and multi-particle correlations, anisotropic flow in small and large systems, and Bayesian analysis. The physics department hosts a centre of excellence in quark matter , which includes both QCD theory groups and our experimental ALICE group.
What We Expect from Candidates:
- A recent M.S. degree in experimental nuclear or particle physics
- Knowledge and experience in machine learning frameworks with Python, high-performance computing environments, and other statistical learning tools (advantageous)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
The duties, qualification requirements, and language skills for PhD students are stipulated in the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines . The required master's degree must be completed before starting the position.
How to Apply:

- Relevant certificates, diplomas (or expected date of M.S. degree completion), and academic transcripts
- At least two reference letters should be sent directly to dong.jo.kim@jyu.fi
- For further details, please contact Dong Jo Kim at dong.jo.kim@jyu.fi
Apply from November 5, 2024, and until the position is filled.
Department of Physics
The primary areas of research at the Department of Physics are materials physics, nuclear physics and particle physics. In materials physics, the core research fields are the physics of nanomaterials and thin films, quantum matter and quantum technologies, light-matter interaction and physics and chemistry of nanoparticles. Nuclear physics concentrates on nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure and applied accelerator-based research, and particle physics on the physics of the strong interaction and ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, particle cosmology and neutrino physics. The department hosts an Academy of Finland Center of Excellence in Quark Matter. Experimental research at the Department is conducted in the Accelerator Laboratory, the multidisciplinary Nanoscience Center (NSC) and in foreign research centers such as CERN and FAIR.
The University of Jyväskylä is a human-centered environment of 2,500 experts and 14,500 students. Our goal is to create wisdom and well-being for all. JYU's naturally beautiful campus is located in the heart of the city of Jyväskylä. JYU is the third largest employer in Central Finland.
