Pay Range
$39.98 - $49.65 Hourly for the 981.2 level
$47.93 - $59.49 Hourly for the 981.3 level

Job Description
We have an opening for a Precision Machinist/ Senior Precision Machinist. The successful candidate will provide journeyman-level manufacturing support to fabricate complex parts, components, and assemblies according to customer specifications. The employee will be required to perform various operations related to nuclear material machining. This includes inert machining, nuclear material machining, working in gloveboxes and maintenance assignments. This role involves close technical collaboration with engineering support and facility personnel. This position is in the Manufacturing Engineering Section (MES) of the Materials Engineering Division (MED) in the Engineering directorate.
You will
- Set up and operate all conventional and moderately complex precision and CNC machine tools to manufacture small precision parts and assemblies. This includes the setup and operation of diamond turning and milling machines;
- Handle and manage classified documents, parts, and systems;
- Operate related shop equipment, hand tools, and measuring instruments;
- Perform shop math calculations using intermediate knowledge of material characteristics to achieve ultra-precision finishes, dimensions, and overall design intent;
- Design and fabricate moderately complex fixtures and jigs for various manufacturing processes;
- Provide daily support as a fully qualified Fissile Material Handler, machining radioactive materials and hardware components in glovebox operations;
- Establish and plan techniques and procedures to carry out advanced technical assignments and set task priorities;
- Identify, label, and package radioactive materials, perform waste collection, and housekeeping;
- Use Mastercam and/or CREO to model and program CNC machine tools;
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities at the 981.3 level
- Design and fabricate complex fixtures and jigs for various manufacturing processes;
- Establish and plan techniques and procedures to carry out complex technical assignments and set task priorities.
- Solve complex technical problems with minimal instruction or direction;
- Lead, train, or mentor others by providing regular technical direction and oversight on machine tools, CNC controllers, and manufacturing processes.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship;
- Associate degree in Machine Tool Technology or equivalent completion of an apprenticeship program in the machining trade, or with intermediate to advanced journey level experience;
- Effective written verbal and presentation communication skills;
- Ability to perform moderately complex machining operations involving conventional and CNC machine tools, as well as related manufacturing and measuring equipment;
- Experience performing machining operations involving diamond turning and other CNC machine tools;
- Experience performing precision assembly tasks and operating related manufacturing and measuring equipment;
- Intermediate knowledge of ASME Y14.5M drafting standards (read and interpret blueprints) to produce parts and assemblies;
- Intermediate knowledge of a wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes, including some difficult-to-machine and exotic materials;
- Intermediate level knowledge of CNC programming, machining, planning, and estimating;
- Understanding of safety awareness and safe working practices;
- Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protection equipment;
- Completion of all training to qualify for a fissile material handler;
- Experience working independently and in a team environment.
Additional qualifications at the 981.3 level
- Advanced knowledge of ASME Y14.5M drafting standards (read and interpret blueprints) to produce parts and assemblies;
- Advanced knowledge of a wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes, including some difficult-to-machine and exotic materials;
- Advanced level knowledge of CNC programming, machining, planning, and estimating;
- Effective written, verbal, feedback and presentation communication skills.
Qualifications We Desire
- Familiarity with handling classified documents, classified parts, and classified removable electronic media;
- Radioactive and hazardous materials handling/machining experience;
- Experience operating related optical inspection equipment such as confocal microscopes and other optical measuring instruments, using equipment such as Keyence, Zygo, & Veeco;
- Familiarity with Mastercam and/or CREO CNC programming;
- Diamond Turning and machining experience;
- Experience with managing LLNL ES&H and Security policies and procedures;
- Knowledge of 5-axis programming and machining.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
