The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University has two open positions for highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researchers to work on the ATLAS experiment at CERN .
Stony Brook University's ATLAS group, consisting of five faculty members, two senior researchers, four postdocs, and several graduate and undergraduate students, makes broad contributions to the ATLAS experiment: data analysis with a focus on Higgs physics and related topics including combined performance, detector upgrades and operations.
The main focus of the positions is to perform cutting-edge research on the ATLAS experiment on various topics in collaboration with the teams of the PIs, Dr. Hannah Arnold and Dr. Valerio Dao, respectively. The successful candidates will
- Take a leading role in investigating the Higgs sector through analysing events with single or multiple Higgs bosons, each decaying to pairs of b- or c-quarks and tau-leptons;
- Contribute to improving the understanding of the relevant physics objects or other analysis ingredients;
- Have the opportunity to engage in upgrade projects for the HL-LHC, either related to the LAr calorimeter or the ITk strips tracker, or contribute to detector operations;
- Supervise and mentor the graduate and undergraduate students on the teams;
- Fulfill other duties as assigned, e.g. institutional responsibilities.
The successful candidate is expected to have the ability to work independently and effectively manage time and priorities. They will need to have excellent communication and teamwork skills to conduct the research within the international collaboration, contribute to the preparation of scientific publications, and present the findings at workshops and conferences.
Regular travel is required. It is also possible to reside for periods of one to many months at CERN.
The position is available starting January 2025. The appointment is for three years. Depending on the availability of research funds supporting the position, the appointment might be extended to a maximum of five years.
Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in High Energy Physics or a closely related field in hand by the start of the appointment. Extensive experience in the analysis of data from high-energy particle collisions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with jet/tau-tagging techniques, cutting-edge machine learning approaches, MC simulations, statistical analysis tools, or ATLAS analysis software. Knowledge of detector design, construction, commissioning or operations. Team leadership, mentoring, or supervision experience.
Application:
Applications will be considered until the position is filled. For full consideration, interested applicants should submit by December 9th the following
- Cover Letter;
- Curriculum Vitae;
- Research Statement.
Via Stony Brook University’s Postdoc Portal - jobID: 2404106 and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly to tracy.hillenbrand@stonybrook.edu.
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
