We are currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Publisher, Community Journals to join our Publishing team on a permanent basis. If you’re looking for the next step in your Publishing career, then look no further!

You will be reporting to APAC Head of Publishing who always offers coaching and will inspire you to build your growth at IOP Publishing.

Role Overview

The Senior Publisher, Community Journals is responsible for the performance and day-to-day management of a portfolio of journals, managing and motivating the Publishing team, overseeing commissioning and managing resources and budgets. 

What will you be doing?

Key job accountabilities include:

  • Responsibility for the day-to-day management of a portfolio of journals
    • Ensure that each journal within the portfolio is resourced appropriately.
    • Develop strategies and plans for all journals within the portfolio, which are commercial and in line with business strategy
    • Develop a portfolio strategy in line with market trends and business strategy and working with Head to identify new launch opportunities in line with this
    • Prepare and manage the financial budgets at portfolio and journal level.
    • Monitor progress of performance across the portfolio against agreed article targets and journal plans
  •  Managing and motivating a Community Journal portfolio team
    • Provide effective line management of the Publishers, Associate Publishers and Assistant Publisher(s) within the portfolio.
    • Act as publishing expert for the portfolio and as the escalation point for the team for issues which require complex resolution.
    • Champion growth and innovation within the team.
    • Develop and mentor direct reports and develop talent within the portfolio and across Journals Development, in conjunction with the other Senior Publishers.
    • Deputise for the Head of APAC Journals.
  • Implement the development strategies for the portfolio
    • Working with the Head of APAC Journals, ensure that the commissioning strategy at portfolio and title level is fit for purpose.
    • As commissioning expert, ensure that departmental commissioning processes are adhered to and troubleshoot commissioning issues with alternative solutions and tactics.
    • Develop and manage the portfolio’s Editorial Boards in line with journal strategic and operational requirements, and overarching diversity and inclusion goals
    • Establish strong links with the journals’ author communities through international conference and institutional visits
  • Supporting projects and growth across Publishing Development.
    • Working in conjunction with Heads and the other Senior Publishers, share best practice information and resources across the group.
    • Deliver other key Publishing Development projects as agreed with the Head of APAC Journals
    • Forge relationships across the industry and scientific community, promoting IOPP and looking for new opportunities for partnerships.

About you:

Successful applicants should demonstrate the following:

  • Educated to degree level (a Science degree is desirable)
  • STM Publishing experience
  • Previous experience as a Publisher
  • People management experience
  •  Financial budgeting experience
