The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) is looking for a
Scientific Employee (F/M/D) Head of the XRCT Laboratory
The position will be available from 1 April 2025. The employment contract is limited until 31 March 2027. The place of work is Freiberg. The working time amounts to 39 h/week.
Your tasks:
- Management of the X-Ray Computed Tomography Laboratory at HIF;
- Supervision and operation of the X-Ray CT scanner CoreTom equipped with a spectral detector;
- Supervision and implementation of image processing;
- Development of the automated and standardized workflows established at the HIF;
- Supervision and guidance of students, employees and guest scientists;
- Close interdisciplinary cooperation with the other laboratories in the analytical department and with all other departments at the HIF;
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present research results at conferences;
- Preparation of funding applications for the technical and instrumental expansion and the further development of methods and software packages.
Your Profile:
- Completed PhD in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Geoscience, or related;
- Practical experience in the operation of a CT scanner;
- Experience with 3D image analysis, including advanced segmentation techniques using deep learning;
- A publication record of research based on CT is advantageous;
- Furthermore, we expect the successful applicant to have a keen interest in REM‑based 2D image analysis in order to develop correlative links between the two techniques;
- Good communication skills and team player;
- Ability to provide professional guidance and motivation to team members;
- Fluent in spoken and written English;
- Knowledge of German is not a requirement, but learning German will be an advantage in the long‑term;
- Working knowledge of Avizo, Dragonfly, Python or Open Source image analysis software.
