Electronics Engineer
Closing Date: 10th February 2025
Location: RG7 4PR, located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking.
Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE Aldermaston.
Package: £37,860 -£56,000 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)
Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight. We will consider flexible working requests so that your work may fit in with your lifestyle. Just let us know your preferred working pattern on your application.

AWE is currently recruiting for an Applied Physicist or Applied Engineer for the Future Systems Technologies Group / Non-Nuclear Components Group
Working as part of a team of engineers and scientists, this role is ideally suited to an applied physicist/engineer who enjoys hands-on physics experiments and has an interest in the design of experiments and analysis of results.
In addition to supporting the design and fielding of the experiments, the data you capture and analysis you will perform supports both our hardware development and our modelling programme. This will directly support progression and maturity of the models and technology we develop.
The role will require some travel both around the UK and to the US.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain an understanding of the critical practical and theoretical technology issues affecting the use of electrical energy in firing units to initiate Electro Explosive Devices..
- To develop and maintain an understanding of the critical practical and theoretical technology issues affecting the use of explosive energy.
- To manage various programmes of technical work as directed by the task manager.
- To apply technical knowledge and ability to plan and conduct explosive trials with appropriate diagnostic ..
- To maintain the technical progression of the Electro-Explosives Team.
- To assist in the training of firing officers and other explosive workers in the facility.
- Engagement with relevant communities across AWE.
- Contribute to interactions with international partners and external stakeholders in their field.
- Participate in review, learn and improve activities, and implement the outcomes to ensure the continued development and implementation of best practice in the delivery of technical projects.
Who Are We Looking For?
We do need you to have the following:
- An undergraduate degree in a scientific or STEM discipline, or equivalent qualification e.g. HND plus vocational training, or equivalent experience
Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we'd like you to have experience in some of the following:
- The ability to produce and review technical reports and publications.
- Working as part of a team and skilled in developing staff.
- Strong communication skills; within own team, with other teams and stakeholders, contractors, and ESH&Q representatives.
- Ability to problem solve.
- Innovation skills.
The following would be advantageous but not essential:
- Experience in explosive materials, energetics, firing system design or diagnostics
- Leading individual or group projects
- Experience of shock modelling and use of 3D CAD Software (e.g. Siemens Unigraphics NX)
