The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Establishing and leading the working group "Numerics and IT Methods for Plant and Process Safety" with a focus on simulation and optimization of dynamic systems in chemical process engineering;
  • Supporting the division in acquiring and coordinating research and development projects for numerical method development, reliability and transparency of models, and research software for chemical process engineering;
  • Further development of nonlinear uncertainty quantification of mechanistic and hybrid models in process engineering, focusing on risk analyses and safety considerations for the design and operation of chemical plants;
  • Designing and implementing data models and semantic modeling for information linking in process engineering, with an emphasis on integrating plant design and process simulation;
  • Expanding MathML/XML-based modeling methodology for sequentially initialized and solved mathematical systems in process engineering;
  • Developing a methodology for hybrid multiscale modeling using optimal experimental design;

Supervising scientific staff in:

  • Data modeling, integration of process simulation models with process engineering standards;
  • Set-based model formulation in MathML/XML for efficient process simulation and optimization;
  • Publishing in national and international peer-reviewed journals and presenting at national and international levels.

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed PhD in the fields of Information Technology in Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering Science, Mathematics, Physics, Physical Engineering Sciences or similar;
  • Knowledge of numerical simulation and optimization of dynamic systems;
  • Experience in software development, e.g., using Java or Python;
  • Knowledge of data modeling, e.g., using ontologies, is required;
  • Experience in acquiring and leading R&D projects and corresponding scientific project management;
  • Experience in supervising junior scientific staff;
  • Proven publication activity in the relevant research field;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
  • Good command of German;
  • Good communication and information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment and ability to make decisions as well as ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate.
