Job Details
As a Senior Mechanical Cryogenics Engineer at D-Wave Systems, you will provide technical leadership within the Mechanical and Cryogenics Engineering teams. You will contribute to the development and introduction of our mechanical and cryogenics systems as required to meet overall system requirements.
You will be a key technical resource in the evaluation, design, implementation, and troubleshooting of complex systems for our product and development needs. You will be an indispensable member of a nimble and energetic mechanical engineering team within the multi-disciplinary engineering group. In this role you will work closely with the cryogenics and electrical engineering teams, as well as the production, service, lab operations, processor development, and software teams.
What you will do:
- Ensure the technical success of internal mechanical projects from proposal, through design, development, validation, New Product Introduction, manufacturing and sustaining engineering
- Contribute to the continuous development and improvement of the entire system, which includes the cryogenic system, machine control, input-output systems, and quantum processor interface
- Participate in the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and upgrading of systems in the lab and in the field
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, cryogenic, and instrumentation problems in the lab and in the field
- Create, execute, document, and maintain failure mode effects analysis (FMEA) including unit validation and diagnostic test plans for the product and sub-systems
- Create, execute, document, and maintain engineering activities according to D-Wave’s Professional Practice Management Plan
- Organize, prepare, and present technical information in a clear, effective, and skillful manner within engineering, to other cross-functional teams, and to management
- Lead design reviews and provide technical feedback
- Manage changes to the system using industry-standard change management tools (ECR, ECO, etc.)
- Contribute to the development and application of company tools and process
- Identify and develop intellectual property
- Recruit and mentor new team members
You have:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) with a minimum of 10 years of engineering work including technical leadership experience
- 4+ years of experience in technical product development, several of which involved complex multi-disciplinary products
- Experience in the product development cycle through stable production, including New Product Introduction
- Designed complex thermal systems, preferably cryogenic systems
- The ability to become a Registrant, with EGBC or are a Registrant in good standing
- Proficiency in technical writing including customer-facing documentation
- Experience dealing with customers in a technical setting
- Ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment that is focused on priorities and end results
- Thrives in a highly dynamic multi-disciplinary working environment
- An ability to move quickly and make decisions with limited and sometimes contradictory information
- A strong desire to work with your hands, building and fixing things, and are passionate about providing the highest level of customer support
- Willingness and interest to perform field work and join our on-call team rotation
Exceptional candidates will have:
- Experience designing for low temperature millikelvin applications, microwave, and environmental shielding
- Commercial construction, millwright, mechanic, electrician, or building maintenance experience
- Regulatory Compliance (CSA/UL/CE) knowledge
- Basic machine tools skills
- Precision mechanics experience
- Mechanical, electrical, automotive, or bicycle repair
- Creative hobbies – sewing, painting, woodworking, etc.

The base salary for this role is targeted between $107,000 - $160,000 CAD a year. The final offer is determined by your proficiencies within this level.
