From advances in material science to complex chemistry simulation for drug design and discovery, quantum computers will help solve some of the world’s most important challenges. We recently raised $75M in Series C funding to accelerate our cutting-edge R&D in quantum error correction (QEC), and are partnering with many of the world’s leading quantum hardware providers and government agencies to make fault-tolerant quantum computing a reality. About the role
We have a unique opportunity for a proven quantum error correction expert to lead Riverlane’s growing quantum science team in Boston, US. Currently a team of 4 scientists working on cutting-edge quantum error correction research (in collaboration with our UK-based teams), our US quantum science team also works alongside our newly established hardware engineering team in Boston. With plans to further expand our Boston team, this is a fantastic opportunity to grow and strengthen our high-performing US team.
Collaborating extensively with other teams within Riverlane, as well as with world-leading external partners, the critical work you will do will directly contribute to Riverlane’s Quantum Error Correction Stack.
Reporting to the VP, Quantum Science, you will set the technical direction of the Boston science team, helping us to deliver Riverlane’s exciting and ambitious error correction roadmap and strategic research plan. Our talented science teams are cross disciplinary and include a mix of mathematicians, physicists and software developers, working together on a range of exciting and cutting-edge projects.
What you will do
As our US Quantum Science Lead at Riverlane, your work will vary and will include:
- Setting the technical direction for your team within the context of Riverlane’s quantum error correction roadmap and strategic research plan;
- Leading your team to effectively deliver novel and impactful QEC research and solutions to complex problems;
- Where appropriate, generating high-value QEC innovations leading to patent awards;
- Sharing expertise and collaborating effectively with other teams at Riverlane to guide the development of various parts of the QEC stack;
- Regularly writing high-impact papers;
- Regularly presenting work at world-leading international conferences;
- Supporting Riverlane’s business development team with pitching and writing grant proposals to US government programs;
- Building and managing relationships with world-leading external collaborators on projects;
- Line managing team members and supporting them in their career development;
- Acting as a scientific mentor to colleagues, including reviewing their work;
- Some infrequent international will be required (around 10%), to enable twice yearly trips to Riverlane’s UK headquarters (Cambridge), as well as attendance at key international conferences.
What we need
- PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related technical field (or equivalent professional experience);
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to discuss complex ideas with a variety of audiences in a clear and simple way;
- Substantial relevant industry or academic experience in quantum computing;
- Deep expertise in quantum error correction evidenced in publication track record;
- Experience supervising scientific projects involving multiple people;
- Proven ability to undertake high-quality work reflected by its impact on the broader community;
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a curious mindset.
Even better if you have
- Experience in a quantum error correction leadership role;
- Substantial experience as a line manager or team lead, including experience of effectively growing a team;
- Knowledge of Python and/or C++;
- Experience running experiments on quantum computer;s
- Experience leading successful contract or grant proposals as a PI or co-PI;
- A track record of winning contracts or grants;
- Experience with professional software development practices, including collaborative use of GitHub.
