The Neutrino Telescopes group at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) is looking for an excellent postdoctoral fellow to join our exciting research program developing the Pacific Ocean Neutrino Experiment, P-ONE .

P-ONE is a new neutrino detector starting its first phase of construction off the coast of Canada. The first instrumentation line of P-ONE is planned to be deployed in 2025, and further lines are scheduled for deployment two years later.

The P-ONE group at the UofA is leading the Canadian efforts towards the design of the trigger systems of the experiment, specialized calibration systems, key electronics, optical characterization of the sensors, and the study of the physics potential of a neutrino telescope in the Pacific Ocean. The successful candidate will take a leading role in developing the physics program and final design of P-ONE and will also spearhead the construction of an integration site for P-ONE sensors at the UofA.

The Neutrino Telescopes group at the UofA is a member of P-ONE as well as IceCube, the largest neutrino telescope in operation. The group currently consists of four professors (Carsten Krauss, Roger Moore, Steve Robertson and Juan-Pablo Yáñez), one postdoctoral fellow and seven graduate students. It is supported locally by engineers and technicians experienced in the development of particle detectors. Up to four undergraduate students regularly join our group for research terms, in particular during summer time. A successful candidate will dedicate their time to research and assisting with the mentoring of students. Postdocs at the UofA do not have teaching duties.

Requirements, salary and benefits

Candidates should have a recent PhD in experimental astroparticle physics, nuclear or particle physics, or in a closely related field. While candidates with experience in hardware would be best suited for this position, interest and potential to learn will also be considered.

The appointment can be extended for up to four years, starting with a two year contract and renewing subject to performance and funding. The salary starts at $62,000 CAD per annum and it is adjusted with qualifications and experience. Postdoctoral fellows receive health and dental benefits, in addition to the universal healthcare provided by the province of Alberta. For other benefits visit the UofA PDF website .

A successful candidate would ideally take on the position by summer 2025, but later start dates can be negotiated.
