Developing Future Leaders in Wind and Marine Renewable Energy Engineering

A new Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) at the University of Strathclyde will train researchers to PhD level in wind and marine energy.  Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), a total of 70 PhD students will be recruited for four years of training and research.

These research students will enjoy a comprehensive training programme and an accredited IET/IMechE scheme leading to CEng status.

The new CDT joins together two successful EPSRC CDTs, Wind & Marine Energy Systems and Renewable Energy Marine Structures, their industrial partners and strong track records of training more than 130 researchers to date in offshore renewable energy. It is a collaboration between the universities of, Edinburgh, Oxford and Strathclyde, and will create a comprehensive, world-leading centre covering all aspects of wind and marine renewable energy, both above and below the water. It will produce highly skilled industry-ready engineers with multidisciplinary expertise, deep specialist knowledge and a broad understanding of pertinent whole-energy systems. Our graduates will be future leaders in industry and academia world-wide, driving development of the offshore renewable energy sector, helping to deliver the Government's carbon reduction targets for 2050 and ensuring that the UK remains at the forefront of this vitally important sector.

Course details

Our CDT offers a unique programme, combining training and research which will aid graduates in transitioning into careers in the wind and marine energy sectors. With proven and rapidly growing international demand for highly qualified engineers and researchers, this course offers high level training which is attractive to industries. To prepare for this exciting future, graduates will work closely with manufacturers, developers and researchers. This multidisciplinary programme brings together graduates from various science and technology disciplines to create a unique community of researchers. Training covers all aspects of wind and marine renewable energy systems including the wider socio-economic context.

The Centre for Doctoral Training currently has students from the following backgrounds

  • Electronic & Electrical Engineering;

  • Civil & Environmental Engineering;
  • Physics;
  • Mathematics;
  • Structural Engineering;
  • Design, Manufacturing & Engineering Management;
  • Chemical & Process Engineering;
  • Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering;
  • Renewable Energy.

Entry requirements

All applicants should have either a first-class undergraduate degree or an upper-second-class with a Master's in a physical sciences or engineering discipline. These competitive Studentships will commence each year in October and will cover university fees and provide a highly competitive stipend.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate enthusiasm, creativity, resourcefulness and a mature approach to learning.
