Who are we?

"My favourite thing about teaching physics is helping pupils towards that ‘eureka’ moment and seeing them understand a concept or method." Ellyn, University of Birmingham alumni and Ark Physics trainee.

Ark Teacher Training is an ‘Outstanding’ teacher training programme offering the perfect mixture of theory and classroom practice, designed to develop you into the best teacher you can be. With the current covid-19 pandemic, teaching gives you a rewarding and stable career where you can really make a difference to our students lives.

We believe that every child, regardless of their background, deserves to have access to a great education, which is why we work mainly in areas of low income with a history of academic underachievement.

How is the programme structured?

Unlike a university-based PGCE, you will be based in a school of your choice from day one, spending the whole academic year with your students watching them progress, as well as seeing your own development. The programme provides the perfect balance of theory and practice and at the end of you first year you’ll have achieved the following:

  • QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).
  • PGCE (postgraduate certificate in education) in your chosen teaching subject.

After successfully completing your training year you can progress onto our highly supportive, tailored NQT (newly qualified teacher) programme. We will help you secure an NQT role at your school or at another one in the Ark network and support and guide you through your first few years of teaching.

What support is available to me during the programme?

Teacher training can be challenging, but the Ark Teacher Training team and wider network will support you including:

  • In-school coach.
  • Weekly training sessions.
  • Ark Teacher Training tutor.
  • Peer-to-peer support.

Qualification criteria

  • Have a grade C or above in maths and English language GCSE.
  • Hold (or will hold) an undergraduate Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) prior to beginning your Initial Teacher Training.
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the programme.
  • Not currently hold Qualified Teacher Status.

Give young people their very own breakthrough. Ark Teacher Training is part of the charity Ark, which exists to ensure that all children, regardless of their background, have access to a high-quality education.

Why work for us
Working in the areas of greatest need is a challenge, but all our trainees are supported through our programme by a network of experienced educators, as well as each other. We were rated “Outstanding” in all areas by Ofsted, reflecting the high quality of all aspects of our training. Our rigorous school-based training scheme covers the fundamentals for beginning an illustrious and impactful career in teaching: effective classroom practice, a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) qualification and qualified teacher status (QTS) by the end of the first year. By sharing your passion for physics with young people, you’ll be giving them the knowledge and skills that they need to broaden their horizons and pursue the sciences. You’ll open up their futures to a vast number of exciting career opportunities and help guide them through a range of topics such as electricity, energy and even astrology, as you begin to unpack the universe scientifically.

Training and development
To support and develop you day to day, you’ll have an in-school coach as well as an Ark tutor. Your coach will have designated time on their timetable to spend with you every week to guide you in planning lessons and watch you teach, so they can offer you tailored feedback on your practice. In addition to this, our weekly training sessions will focus on a key part of your teaching, such as behaviour management, and you’ll have the chance to get up and practice your new skills with your fellow trainees before taking them into the classroom.

At the end of your training year, we will help you secure a role at your school or at another one in the Ark network. The training doesn’t stop when you qualify as a teacher. In line with the DfE’s Early Career Framework, we will support and guide you through your first few years of teaching.
