About Us 

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth, and environmental sciences.  

About the Role 

We now require a self-motivated candidate to work as a senior support scientist on laser projects supporting the research at Diamond Light Source. The science is related to structural and electronic changes that occur on timescales of femtoseconds to microseconds and are vital to the performance of a wide range of dynamic systems, including optoelectronics, catalysis, ultrafast phase transitions and biological function.

The role has two main responsibilities:

  • Supporting and operating a high rep-rate femtosecond laser (PORTO)and an infra-red laser (QCL) which are used for experiments for pump-probe and time resolved spectroscopy or diffraction measurements. This work will involve working across a number of different beamlines (X-ray instruments) with user groups, the staff of the Central Laser Facility, and with different beamline teams and other staff at Diamond to ensure laser support and instrument developments. Maintaining, and operating a similar suite of femtosecond Coherent lasers in the I06 beamline laser cabin and the recently acquired continuous wave laser for imaging applications.  

About You 

You will hold an appropriate science PhD degree or equivalent qualification or experience, along with being self-motivated and flexible.

Experience/Knowledge are required in the following:

  • The use of lasers. Specification and development of laser instrumentation. Windows/ Linux/Unix. Knowledge of synchrotron radiation techniques (Desirable). Experience in the relevant area of science, e.g. spectroscopy, ultrafast science. (Desirable)

You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills, and the ability to interact effectively with staff and facility users at all levels.
