Senior Software Developer

Location - Reading/Basingstoke area (hybrid working available)

Package - £41,950 -£60,000pa, depending on suitability and level of experience

For over 60 years, AWE Blacknest has been the home of the Forensic Seismology Team and since the opening for signature of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in 1996, the home of the UK National Data Centre (UK NDC) too. We are looking to recruit an experienced Software Developer who has experience of technical project management to work on the Nuclear Treaty Verification programme, supporting AWE's national nuclear security role. You will work as part of a team advising the UK Government on the technical verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

AWE (one of the best 25 big companies to work for in the UK) offers an attractive array of benefits which include:

  • Market leading contributory pension scheme
  • Generous holiday entitlement - 270 hours a year (inclusive of Bank Holidays) plus every other Friday off
  • Salary sacrifice scheme
  • Flexible working opportunities
  • Relocation package available (terms and conditions apply)

Main duties:

  • Leading the software development of the UK National Data Centre for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT)
  • Taking the lead on the assessment of CTBT International Data Centre products, e.g., event bulletins, through processing, evaluating and providing feedback on those products and the capabilities of the CTBT International Monitoring System
  • Develop and maintain software to manage and provide access to AWE Blacknest's extensive archive of seismo-acoustic waveform data and associated metadata

To be successful in this role, it is essential that candidates have the following:

  • A degree in a physical or computing science (or equivalent experience), and possibly hold a higher degree in a physical or computing science
  • Experience in software development
  • Experience of technical project management/delivery and of organising work in a research environment.
  • Proficiency with Unix-like operating systems (Linux, macOS)
  • Experience programming in C/C++ and Python, and the ability to work with other similar languages as required
  • Experience of relational database management and SQL

Whilst not considered a checklist, candidates would also benefit from having any of the following:

  • Experience of handling large data sets (in particular geophysical data and time-series data)
  • Experience with web application development and web standards
  • Familiarity with software engineering tools and best practices (version control, collaborative software development, testing, documentation)

We are keen to hear from self-motivated individuals with good communication and presentation skills. The successful candidate will be required to work collaboratively with both the UK NDC scientists and the UK NDC operations team, so the ability to understand their needs and to be able to translate these into code is essential.

We are looking for candidates to have experience in driving projects through to completion with minimal supervision and can summarise results and findings and to communicate these effectively. You'll also be comfortable working in diverse teams with differing technical skills and backgrounds. Some UK and or overseas travel may be involved.

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
