AWE has an exciting opportunity for an Applied Dispersion Modelling Scientist to come and work on some unique experimental trials and conduct fundamental research in support of the UK's national nuclear security.

Location - Reading/Basingstoke area

Package - £33,300 - £45,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

About the role:

The Radiological Assessment Team is looking for individuals with a background in running experimental mid to large scale experiments and a strong technical understanding of material science, radiation protection, radiation physics and its effects, nuclear weapon technologies or the capacity to learn and apply this knowledge quickly.

You will be working in the Radiological Assessment Team within the Systems Assessments Group (SAG). This multi-discipline group provides mission effectiveness and weapons effects assessments to AWE and our government stakeholders. We also contribute a range of capabilities in support of the UK's national nuclear security and treaty verification requirements. We undertake fundamental scientific research, experimental trials, software model development and operational analysis to provide strategic answers directly into our customer community.

To be considered, we would expect you to demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • Chemistry/Physics or similar STEM discipline (undergraduate degree or equivalent experience)
  • Experimental background in either atmospheric dispersion or radiation work
  • A specialism in one or more of the following areas is advantageous:
    • Radiation Transport

    • Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling

    • Aerosol Physics

    • Experimental experience running and/or analysing atmospheric dispersion trials

    • Radiation Protection

    • Materials science

    • Meteorology

    • Experience in scientific programming using languages such as Fortran, Python or C++

  • Applying numerical methods to real world problems and using this to inform the design of experimental programs
  • Ability to interpret, analyse, summaries and communicate technical information
  • Experience in leading and participating in experimental trials and communicating technical output
  • Experience in translating customer requirements into a technical programme of work
  • Clear and concise communication, both verbally and in written work
  • Able to manage their own time and deliver against project deadlines
