Job Description

Introduction

Are you an enthusiastic mechanical technician looking to acquire experience in a clean room environment, working on cutting edge superconducting RF problems? Take Part!

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes. You will be working within the Radio Frequency Group, in the SRF Section.

As a SRF clean room technician, you will be part of a small team working on superconducting RF devices with the aim of assembling, maintaining and testing high-performance superconducting radio-frequency components and infrastructure for CERN’s accelerators, including present and future projects.

Functions

4As a SRF clean room technician, you will:

  • Be in charge of the preparation in clean room conditions of superconducting RF devices (cavities, ancillaries, and cryomodules) for cold tests and acceleration operation.
  • Support scientific staff for the design and realisation of special tooling and test setups.
  • Assemble and test superconducting RF accelerating structures for CERN accelerators: LHC, HIE ISOLDE, HL-LHC.
  • Prepare components for clean room assemblies of SRF devices, according to ISO standards.
  • Be in charge of the realization of technical drawings with CAD, for small clean room tooling, and for cold test setups.
  • Verify the qualification and acceptance of mechanical parts for the SRF Section.
  • Produce quality control procedures and documentation of test results.

Qualifications

Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanics or a related field.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in the field of the assembly and preparation of superconducting RF cavities for particle accelerators.
  • Experience with CAD design tools such as AUTOCAD or CATIA.
  • Demonstrated experience with UHV technology and clean room work.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of clean-room techniques.
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.
  • Knowledge and application of sealing techniques.
  • Knowledge and use of standard vacuum components and piping.
  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
  • Demonstrating accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in routine situations.
