Location - Reading area (On-site role)

Package - £41,950 - £60,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

AWE's Physics department has an opportunity in our High Performance Computing (HPC) group for a system administrator to support AWE's HPC supercomputers and their user communities. You will be responsible for managing some of the most powerful supercomputers in the UK and supporting computational services that have essential roles for AWE's scientific and engineering communities. The roles we have available offer opportunities for career progression.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the planning, installation, testing and commissioning of new HPC systems
  • Provide day-to-day system administration support to in service HPC systems
  • Provide technical advice and support to HPC stakeholders
  • Configuration management of HPC platform hardware and software
  • Monitor the performance and the efficient resource usage of HPC systems
  • Development of in-house tools and procedures to support HPC platform management
  • Maintain an awareness of current and future developments in the HPC field
  • Support the functional specification and evaluation of future HPC procurements
  • Overseas travel to attend conferences and collaborative meetings

To be considered for this opportunity, you'll need the following:

  • Experience of LINUX/UNIX operating systems
  • Good scripting skills (preferably Python and Bash)
  • Knowledge of computer security concepts
  • Experience of first- and second-line user support
  • Able to work independently and unsupervised, as well as part of a team
  • Flexible, self-motivated and the ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Good communication skills

The following would be advantageous:

  • Familiarity with C, C++, Fortran or similar high-level language
  • Experience of HPC clustered computing
  • Experience of parallel file systems (preferably Lustre)
  • Knowledge of parallel programming concepts
  • Familiarity with working in secure environments

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
