The European Spallation Source ERIC, ESS, is an exciting multimillion Euro project within the field of neutron science that will play a part in the future of science in Europe. ESS is based in the university city Lund, Sweden and is a partnership of 13 European countries.

ESS is looking for a Group Leader for our Radation Protection team, a key role for the success of the project placed in the Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality Division.

About the team

The tasks and responsibilities of the radiation protection group include but are not limited to supporting the organisation in radiation protection services and as experts within radiation protection with knowledge in radiation physics and radiological and environmental control. By:

  • Establishing operational plans for new installations and the acceptance into service of new or modified radiation sources in relation to any engineering controls, design features, safety features and warning devices relevant to radiation protection
  • Advise and supporting the radiation protection services, the ESS management and staff in your area of expertise
  • Providing high-level specialist advice on radiation protection to radiation protection services, the ESS management and staff using sources of ionising radiation.
  • Providing comprehensive, professional and independent advice to the ESS with respect to the required (legal and operational) protection measures to restrict exposure to ionising radiation.
  • Contribute to the licensing of the ESS facility in areas of radiation protection
  • Assessing of radiological consequences for the general public and the environment for planned operations as well as for incidents or accidents.
  • Contribution to document management and user programme in areas of radiation protection.

About the role

As our new Group leader you will lead, manage and further develop the radiation protection group. You will also work closely with ESS management and staff to support the ESS project in radiation protection matters when it comes to commissioning and operational activities of the facility. Ideally you are part of the Radiation Protection Expert function. You will oversee the Radiation Protection Programme of the ESS facility and will be responsible to manage the following function and services:

  • The Radiation Protection Expert Function
  • Operational Radiation Protection
  • Radiological and Environmental Monitoring Systems Project and Service Dosimetry Service
  • Radioactive waste management
  • Radioanalytical laboratory

About you

We believe that you are passionate about, have strong knowledge and experience in a wide range of radiation protection activities. You also need insight and knowledge regarding regulations, in particular with Swedish and European radiation protection regulations. To be a successful candidate you need:

  • Master degree in radiation physics, health physics or similar
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, mentoring and coordination of personnel
  • At least 7 to 10 years of work experience in operational radiation protection, and the experience to define what competences that are needed to build radiation protection services.
  • Work experience as certified or trained radiation protection officer or radiation protection expert
  • Knowledge in shielding and dose analysis for various radiological conditions
  • Experience in performing hazard analysis and specification of hazard controls for radiological work is an advantage Experience with radiation protection training programmes
  • Experience from an accelerator driven facility or similar is an advantage
  • Written technical documentation skills
  • Fluent in English ( oral and in writing) Swedish skills would be an advantage

Duration & Location

The position is permanent with six months initial probation period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
