Qioptiq Photonics Limited (An Excelitas Technologies Company) is a leading global supplier of opto-electronics and photonic products present in a variety of markets from medical and biotechnology to semiconductor and industrial markets, based in Hamble, Hampshire.

The role of the Mechanical Design Engineer is to deliver detailed mechanical designs for products and processes for internal and external customers as part of the Engineering Team.

Main Responsibilities:-

Product & process design, development and improvement

  • Based on design brief or customer requirement, produce concept designs
  • Carry out detail design for low-volume precision components and assemblies
  • Attend or chair design review meetings
  • Create & structure BoMs for manufacture
  • Carry out proof-of-concept experiments and prototype build
  • Maintain existing/legacy designs and carry out design modifications.
  • Work with NPI engineering to develop processes and tooling
  • Identify and meet all compliance requirements
  • Identify & propose improvements to product design and build processes

Technical Support

  • Provide technical training and support to NPI and production personnel.
  • Liaise with vendors to optimize design viability where necessary
  • Provide support to the Sales, Customer Support and Product Management functions in bid preparation

General

  • Observe and promote safe working practices at all times
  • Ensure compliance with the company quality management systems
  • Communicate deviations or risks to project plan or goals
  • Protect company IP in line with agreed strategy
  • Perform other tasks as directed

The successful candidate will possess the following:-

  • Degree or equivalent in a mechanical engineering discipline, or equivalent vocational training in a relevant industrial environment
  • Solid experience in the detailed design of machined parts
  • Design for manufacture
  • Ability to demonstrate original thinking and an innovative approach to problem solving, from top-level concept to piece-part design.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques appropriate to small batch production
  • Hands-on experience of 2D and 3D CAD systems
  • Problem solving & lateral thinking
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and ability to demonstrate scientific literacy
  • Non-smoker/vaper
