Job Details

Our Applied Physicists are a key element within our Warhead Engineering organisation, maintaining knowledge of our existing designs, and investigating future design options. They provide underpinning theoretical and modelling capabilities to enhance the understanding of the complex physical processes associated with weapon component function and enhancing the ability to design for the future.

Package: £33,850 - £50,800 (dependent on skills and experience)

In this role you will bring a wide background knowledge of physics, materials, and engineering principles to apply design tools such as finite element modelling to explore the component design space and investigate optimisation to customer requirements.

You will also support the experimental testing of sub-component designs in a high voltage test environment.

We will be looking for suitable candidates with much of the following knowledge/experience and a strong drive to develop their skills in this role:

  • A degree in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or other numerate discipline; equivalent NQF level 6 qualification or equivalent attainment
  • A sound knowledge of physical processes and experience in applying numerical modelling codes/tools to model them. With good understanding of Plasma Physics and particle accelerators
  • Methodical approach to problem solving and planning experimental work with ability to draw together and interpret evidence/data from a variety of sources to reach a reasoned conclusion
  • Ability to articulate complex technical concepts/ideas/proposals and translate these into programmatic tools such as plan/schedule of work, cost estimates, and business cases
  • Able to work independently and unsupervised, as well as being a co-operative and collaborative team member
  • Flexible, self-motivated, with the ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, and with good judgement of the appropriate level for the audience
  • Able to engage stakeholders and build a network of Subject Matter Experts and Technical Authorities
  • Working in a multi-discipline, regulated environment, with strong emphasis on safety and security

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role through United Kingdom Security Vetting.

Candidates should be willing to travel internationally on business. This role may lead to opportunities for international secondment.
