Job Details

We have an exciting opportunity to join IOP Publishing’s ebooks team on a permanent basis as an Editorial Assistant.

The Editorial Assistant role is pivotal to achieving our ultimate aim of helping authors share their knowledge with the world. It is the ideal introduction to STM book publishing and central to the organisation as you will be working with colleagues in many departments to help ensure the smooth running of our books business.

The position also plays a vital role in ensuring excellent author service. The ebooks team publishes leading research and educational books in the physical sciences, and the successful applicant will work closely with our authors and commissioning editors at every stage of the process, from the initial new book proposal through to the publication of each title.

Core responsibilities include author communications, checking manuscripts and permissions, managing contracts, supporting the peer review process, writing marketing texts, briefing cover designs and providing general support to the team.

About you

Happy to work independently as well as within a team, you’ll be able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills and also be adaptable and quick to learn. You’ll have an eye for detail and will take a proactive approach to maintaining high standards of accuracy when entering data and in written and spoken correspondence.

Your drive for results will allow you to keep the progress of book proposals and manuscripts on track, taking the lead on the majority of author communications, and using your judgement to escalate issues when required.

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • A good general education, ideally degree educated or equivalent
  • Advanced user of usual office technologies: MS Office and collaboration tools
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral (including telephone) and written
  • Excellent organisational, time and task management skills; methodical in approach
  • Keen interest in STM publishing
  • Ability to work independently and manage own workload

We know it is unusual for someone to tick every box so, if you don’t meet all the criteria, but demonstrate most of the skills and experience we are looking for, and have the enthusiasm to work with us, please go ahead and apply.

What we offer

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer employees an excellent pension scheme (up to 12% company contribution), discretionary annual bonus scheme, 25+ days holiday (not including bank holidays), standard 35-hour working week, volunteering days, and a comprehensive benefits package including private medical insurance, life assurance, and a range of flexible benefits such as cycle to work scheme, discounted gym membership, healthcare cash plan, and payroll giving.

Our modern and contemporary offices are based in the thriving city centre of Bristol, a stone’s throw from Temple Meads train station, and within walking distance of Cabot Circus shopping centre and numerous cafés and restaurants. Named on more than one occasion as the best city in the UK to live in, Bristol is a cosmopolitan and creative city boasting a historic harbour, internationally renowned cultural institutions and is home to world-class festivals and events.

The contractual location of this role is IOPP’s Bristol office but we will consider applicants from a wider geographical area who are happy to travel to Bristol. You should be prepared to attend the Bristol office on one to two days per month on average, or every day if you prefer. IOPP has a flexible, hybrid working model in place, in which colleagues work choose where they work for the majority of the time.

To apply, please submit your CV and cover note through our careers site.

We aim to review applications soon after they are received, and will arrange interviews when there’s someone we’re keen to meet, so please don’t hold off applying until the closing date is approaching - we don’t want you, or us, to miss out!
