The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Your responsibilities include:

  • Development, validation and application testing of distributed fibre-optic sensors and sensor systems in the entire field of distributed fibre sensor technology (in particular distributed acoustic fibre sensor technology and distributed sensor technology based on non-linear effects in optical fibres);
  • Supporting the head of division in the strategic development of the research area;
  • Independent acquisition of R&D projects in this field as well as their management and utilisation of results;
  • Competent representation of the field at national and international level;
  • Maintenance and expansion of BAM's international networks in the field;
  • Supervision of young scientists (especially doctoral and post-doctoral students);
  • Competent consulting of national and European companies of the economy as well as research institutions in the application of distributed fibre-optic sensor technology;
  • Independent acquisition and implementation of services in the field;
  • Participation in national and international standardisation and rule-making for distributed fibre-optic sensor technology.

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed scientific university studies in the field of physics, electrical engineering or comparable with a very good doctorate;
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the development and application of distributed fibre-optic sensor technology (in particular distributed fibre-optic acoustic sensor technology and distributed sensor technology based on non-linear effects in optical fibres);
  • Experience in the acquisition and management of R&D projects and corresponding scientific project management;
  • Experience in supervising young scientists;
  • Very good presentation and publication skills, demonstrated by regular publications (especially in peer-reviewed journals) and participation in conferences;
  • Very good oral and written expression skills in German and English;
  • Good communication and information skills, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/willingness and ability to work in a team, willingness to cooperate, flexibility as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills.
