Location - Reading area (on-site role)

Package - £33,000 - £55,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

Working within the Radiation Science Group, the successful candidate will be required to undertake frequent visits to overseas facilities to undertake radiation effects experiments on pulsed power platforms and nuclear research reactors.

In addition to supporting the design and fielding of experiments you will also support development and fielding of diagnostic techniques for shock physics and thermostructural response experiments. You will use the results of the experiments to support both our core product and our modelling programme to ensure the right data is gathered to progress the maturity of the models we use.

This role is ideally suited to a physicist or engineer who enjoys hands-on physics experiments and has an interest in performing computer simulations with commercial and bespoke finite element codes to support the design of experiments and analysis of results. A willingness to travel overseas is essential to participate in experimental campaigns.

Whilst not considered a checklist, the successful candidates would benefit from having experience in any of the following:

  • Experiments on large test facilities
  • Knowledge of interferometry techniques for measuring velocity
  • Knowledge of fast strain and temperature measurement techniques
  • Experienced in working in a safe manner in laboratory environments
  • Development of National Instruments Labview code
  • Shock physics
  • A firm grounding in Solid state physics
  • An understanding of how radiation interacts with matter
  • Programming language such as Python or C++
  • Linux/HPC computer environments
  • Commercial finite element analysis codes such as Abaqus

Candidates should have the ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority changing environment and be able to manage their own workload. You will also have initiative, enthusiasm, a flexible approach and ability to work to tight deadlines.

You will have a strong degree in Physics, Engineering or a related subject with a focus on applied science. Postgraduate degrees such as MPhys, MSc, MEng, and PhD would also be welcome.

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
