Package - £28,000 - £38,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

The successful candidate will help to undertake nonintrusive radio-metrological practices of penetrating radiations (gamma ray, neutron) to characterise nuclear materials for our customers supported by empirical scientific research and experimentation necessary to underwrite the safety and performance of nuclear warheads, support nuclear material accountancy & control, maintain national nuclear security and develop the capability and technology that meets future nuclear deterrent needs.

What will you be responsible for?

  • Maintaining a good level of knowledge and awareness in chosen technical field(s)

  • Participating in collaborative working relationships (internal/external)

  • Ensure technical equipment is maintained and operated appropriately and risks are appropriately communicated

  • Undertake assessment of own work as part of progress checking, provide progress reports and deliver final technical output to scope

  • Ensure the safe conduct of research activity and take appropriate action to maintain and improve standards

Whilst not considered a checklist, candidates would benefit from having any of the following:

  • A Degree in a scientific or STEM discipline, equivalent NQF level 6 qualification or equivalent experience

  • Working experience conducting empirical scientific research in the field of radiometric physics, ideally applied to nuclear material characterisation and drawing and presenting sound detailed conclusions

  • Working experience of managing own research project activities

  • An ability to plan and manage the delivery of own work or that of a small technical team

  • An ability to provide technical input within own field of expertise that can influence project or team activity

  • Able to solve technical problems by applying specialist technical knowledge to own work, or working as part of a team, transferring knowledge to help solve problems outside their own area of expertise

  • Being prepared to work in designated radiation and contamination areas

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
