Helping you train to teach physics
As a leading scientific membership society, one of our core aims is to secure a flourishing future for physics.
To help us achieve this, we’re offering exceptional physics and engineering graduates £29,000 tax-free funding to support them into a career in teaching where they can inspire the next generation of physicists and pass on their passion for physics.
No single day in the classroom is the same. As a physics teacher, you’ll think on your feet and use your creativity to address new challenges and answer unique questions. You’ll help your students to better understand the world around them and give them the knowledge and confidence to pursue physics to A-level and beyond.
What’s in it for you?
In addition to £29,000 tax-free funding, you’ll become part of our community of scholars with access to:
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities with support from IOP and access to online workshops and events;
- Online networking opportunities with fellow scholars;
- Free IOP membership throughout the teacher training year including access to Physics World publication, our exclusive Career Development Hub and member-led local branches and special interest groups.
Who we’re looking for:
We’re looking for graduates with an excellent academic record, with a first, 2:1, master’s or PhD degree. In exceptional circumstances, applicants with a 2:2 and significant relevant experience will be considered. A physics A-level or equivalent (grade C or above) is desirable.
Your degree must be in physics or a related subject such as engineering or mathematics. Our scholarships will be awarded to the very best individuals who impress us with their academic record, physics subject knowledge and commitment to teaching, who demonstrate a passion for the subject with the ability to communicate clearly and inspire others. A core part of the Institute’s mission is to give all pupils access to specialist physics teachers. Pupils in low-socioeconomic areas tend to have limited access to specialist teaching, so we are encouraging IOP scholars to consider a role in such areas and we will be providing extra mentoring support for those who chose to teach there.
To become an IOP Scholar, you need to secure a place on a non-salaried teacher training course in England by September 2023.
How to apply
All applications are made online at this link.
Please read our eligibility criteria thoroughly before making your application.
If your online application is shortlisted, it will be reviewed by a panel of IOP staff including experienced physics teachers. You will also be asked to complete a further online subject knowledge test based on school-level physics up to and including A-level. Successfully passing this test, the receipt of a suitable reference and gaining a recommendation from the shortlisting panel will lead to a scholarship offer.
The IOP reserves the right to request candidates attend an online interview should the panel deem this necessary.

The Institute of Physics (IOP) is the professional body and learned society for physics in the UK and Ireland. We seek to raise public awareness and understanding of physics and support the development of a diverse and inclusive physics community. As a charity, we’re here to ensure that physics delivers on its exceptional potential to benefit society.
Why work for us
As a society we face an unprecedented array of challenges. Globally, we need to address a changing climate and a growing population, to decarbonize economies, improve healthcare and ensure water, food and energy supplies. Domestically, we need to develop the next generation of industries to create jobs and improve productivity to safeguard citizens’ futures.
Physics has a vital role to play in tackling these issues and helping make the UK and Ireland fit for a new industrial era of science, technology and engineering.
There’s never been a more exciting time to join the IOP. We have an ambitious new corporate strategy “Unlocking the Future”, that seeks to address these challenges, and you’ll play a part in helping us to deliver it.
You’ll work from our new flagship King’s Cross offices. As well as a competitive salary and professional development opportunities, we offer employees a comprehensive benefits package including an excellent pension scheme, private medical insurance and generous annual leave. We also offer a range of other benefits including childcare vouchers, gym membership and interest-free season ticket loans.
