Job Details

Our group is studying thermodynamic and transport properties of new quantum materials, working closely with solid state chemists and experts in molecular beam epitaxy growth. As part of this collaborative research programme, we are seeking a research fellow to work closely with these groups both on the characterisation of new materials utilising new state of the art MPMS and PPMS facilities as well as bespoke ultra-low temperature and high magnetic field facilities in our group.

The research is embedded in the wider drive within the Centre of Designer Quantum Materials including groups from both at the School of Physics and Astronomy as well as Chemistry (https://www.quantummatter.co.uk). The wider goals are focussed on the exploration of novel phenomena in strongly correlated electron systems by exploiting the possibilities of thin film growth techniques as well as bespoke solid state synthesis. This effort comprises a new centre for MBE growth of transition metal oxides and dichalcogenides, groups specialising in spectroscopic studies (STM and ARPES) and neutron scattering as well as theory groups with established collaborations with the universities of Bristol, Edinburgh, London and Oxford, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Diamond, Max Planck Institutes for Solid State Research (Stuttgart, Germany) and Chemical Physics of Solids (Dresden, Germany) as well as Cornell University (USA).

The project will involve work with bespoke experimental apparatus based on microfabricated structures suitable for extreme conditions (low temperatures, high magnetic fields) for specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetisation and torque experiments as well as new general purpose MPMS and PPMS measurement facilities. The scientific focus of the research program will be on phenomena related to superconductivity, topologically nontrivial band structures and magnetic phases in low dimensional systems such as thin film materials and bulk samples of heavy fermion superconductors as well iridate and osmate quantum magnets.

You must have a PhD in experimental physics at the time of the start date, an excellent knowledge of solid state physics, and ideally direct experience with non-commercial research apparatus for high precision measurements and/or on sub-K low temperature experiments.

The post is initially for 1 year with possible extension up to 2 years.

Informal enquiries can be made (NOT full applications) to: Dr Andreas W Rost, Email: ar35@st-andrews.ac.uk / https://rost.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in Academic posts at the University.

The University is committed to equality for all, demonstrated through our working on diversity awards (ECU Athena SWAN/Race Charters; Carer Positive; LGBT Charter; and Stonewall). More details can be found at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.

Closing Date: 6 September 2021

Interview Date: Week commencing 20 September 2021 (online)

We encourage applicants to apply online at www.vacancies.st-andrews.ac.uk/welcome.aspx, however if you are unable to do this, please call +44 (0)1334 462571 for an application pack.

Company

The School aims to carry out world-leading curiosity-driven research which both pushes the boundaries of fundamental science and is of high impact, with national and global benefit. Its research is internationally known in each of its three strategic research themes: photonics, condensed matter physics and astronomy. Much of the research is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, including activities in functional materials, biophysics and exoplanetary science. In the most recent national assessment of research excellence, REF 2014, the School was ranked third in the UK (in a joint submission with the University of Edinburgh) for research quality in physics and astronomy.
