AWE are looking for a Pulsed Power Scientist to join a unique team responsible for operating and maintaining the UK's largest X-ray machine. We use this machine to conduct important experiments and we are looking for a scientist to come and support this exciting work!

Location - Reading area

Package - £33,300 - £46,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

As a Pulsed Power Scientist within our operations team, you will be tasked with understanding the operation and complexities of high energy pulsed power X-ray simulators, continuous improvements and development of diagnostic capabilities in support of AWE's programmes. This will involve the development fitting of bespoke instrumentation solutions for experiments, analysis of machines and understanding experimental data.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Collecting and managing data in accordance to UK standards;

  • Assisting with routine and non-routine maintenance on these facilities, if required;

  • Using high-speed digital oscilloscopes to record machine diagnostics;

  • Providing suggestions for improvements of machine operations;

  • Preparing the machines for trials and supporting the trials teams;

  • Ensuring safe, secure, and clean operations;

  • Analysing data to monitor trends and machine performance.

We are looking for candidates to ideally be able to show aptitude in problem solving and have the core skills needed to modernise, improve and develop existing and new diagnostics. Experience in calibration laboratory operations would be beneficial. A sound approach to electrical safety is essential.

Whilst not considered a checklist, we would expect candidates to have the following:

  • Degree level knowledge in Physics, Electrical Engineering Physics or comparable subject (essential) or post-graduate qualifications (desirable), along with experience of high bandwidth electrical diagnostics;

  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, excellent team working ability, proactive, and highly organised;

  • Experience in experimental tools and techniques, manufacturing of prototype units, and the underpinning technology of those techniques;

  • Experience in data analysis, such as signal processing;

  • Broad understanding of working with hazardous materials and equipment and health & safety;

  • Willing to travel and work at other UK and overseas sites as required;

  • Willingness to work in confined spaces, with the need to do some manual handling and the wearing of PPE.

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
