The Research Integrity Officer’s (RIO) role is to contribute to the quality, reliability, and trustworthiness of IOP Publishing’s content by managing allegations of publication misconduct and correcting the scientific record. The RIO addresses allegations of misconduct promptly and consistently, in line with industry guidelines, owning and managing the majority of cases to conclusion, with support from the Research Integrity and Manager (RIM). The RIO will support the RIM in their goal to prevent and tackle emerging research integrity challenges and will work with cross-functional teams across the business to ensure goals and objectives are met and promoted.

What will you be doing?

Key job accountabilities:

Manage all investigations relating to allegations of research integrity misconduct, including but not limited to:

  • Responding to whistle-blowers;
  • Challenging communications with authors, reviewers and board members;
  • Interpreting plagiarism reports and assessing articles for potential duplication;
  • Escalating cases and queries to institutions, and responding to requests from them;
  • Preparing correction and retraction notices, working closely with production colleagues;
  • Update internal best practice and supporting materials as agreed with the RIM.

About you:

Successful applicants should demonstrate the following:

  • Scientific academic background is essential with a physics background desirable;
  • Extensive experience in an editorial role within journals publishing is required;
  • A demonstrable understanding of research integrity problems affecting the STM Publishing market is required;
  • Extensive experience of COPE workflows and guidelines is required;
  • Resiliency in handling escalated cases is required;
  • Experienced user of relevant software and tools (e.g. ScholarOne, iThenticate) is desirable.

What we offer:

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer employees an excellent pension scheme (up to 12% company contribution), discretionary annual bonus scheme, 25+ days holiday, standard 35-hour working week, volunteering days, and a comprehensive benefits package including private medical insurance, life assurance, as well as a range of flexible benefits such as cycle to work scheme, discounted gym membership and healthcare cash plan.

Our modern and contemporary offices are based in the thriving city centre of Bristol, a stone’s throw away from Temple Meads train station, and within walking distance of Cabot Circus shopping centre, and numerous cafés and restaurants. Named on more than one occasion as the best city in the UK to live in, Bristol is a cosmopolitan and creative city boasting a historic harbour, internationally renowned cultural institutions and home to world-class festivals and events.

As there will not be a requirement for the person in this role to be in the office weekly, we are open to considering applicants from a wider geographical area who are happy to travel to Bristol around once per quarter for meetings, annual appraisals, one to one and team meetings, subject to business needs.

To apply, please submit your CV and cover note through our careers site.
