Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://atap.lbl.gov/) Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Division (ATAP, https://atap.lbl.gov/) has an opening for a Program Head, Physicist Staff Scientist or Physicist Senior Scientist to join the team.

As head of the Berkeley Accelerator Controls and Instrumentation (BACI) program, you will be responsible for leading the program in developing new controls and instrumentation that increasingly drive the capability of complex accelerator systems. As both accelerators and the needs of their users become ever more subtle and precise, these systems must become ever more innovative and sophisticated. This includes world class programs in feedback and machine learning controls across areas including accelerators, Low Level RF, laser combining, and quantum information science; advanced RF structures including structures in strong magnetic fields; novel beam sources and diagnostics.

This position will serve as a member of the leadership team of the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics division. You will build collaborative relationships with other Divisional and Laboratory programs including ALS and ALS-U accelerator physics, Engineering Division, the BELLA laser accelerator program, the Accelerator Modeling program, and others. This position will lead a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians to carry out experiments and simulations. Project work is a key component of the Program, and the Program Head leads current projects and also collaborations that underlie future project opportunities.  They will establish a culture of excellence and inclusion by developing and recruiting a diverse team of outstanding scientists and staff, enthusiastically supporting and promoting their career development.

What You Will Do:

  • Provide scientific and program leadership for BACI research programs and employees, including scientists, postdoctoral fellows, professional staff, affiliates, and students;
  • Develop new initiatives advancing a long-term research vision and strategic plan aligned with DOE and national goals, in collaboration with Division and Laboratory leadership;
  • Play a leadership role in planning, managing and performing forefront investigations in instrumentation and controls for particle accelerators;
  • Foster strong relationships with partner divisions, laboratories and institutions, and effectively generate and manage project roles;
  • Address management and resource challenges of a complex program;
  • Ensure operational effectiveness and compliance of the program, working with Division staff;
  • Maintain a safe working environment in the program, engaging staff and ensuring the proper safety processes and disposition of waste materials;
  • Foster a culture of diversity, inclusion, equity, and accountability by: following best practices; engaging staff at all levels; and through recruitment and promotion;
  • Participate strongly in community planning and review activities;
  • Disseminate personal and program experimental and research results via publications in refereed journals and presentations;
  • Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the program level;
  • Independently solve complex problems using ingenuity, creativity, and advanced scientific principles;
  • Participate in Division planning with program heads, Deputies and Director, and develop relationships and interact with staff in the Division, Laboratory and externally.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Experimental Physics or equivalent experience;
  • Strong record of research accomplishments, as evidenced by scholarly publications, patents, development and release of software products, and/or funded research grants;
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in the management of scientific projects and collaborative science with multidisciplinary teams;
  • Recognized as an expert in an area of beam instrumentation, controls, sources or related fields;
  • Knowledge of accelerator physics and awareness of challenges and needs in instrumentation, controls, RF structures, and particle sources;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical direction and effective leadership to collaborations among a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical personnel;
  • Successful track record of developing initiatives and programs, obtaining funding to support staff and the ability to develop and maintain an independent research program;
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to interact at management level, both internally and externally;
  • Be independent, innovative and able to design, guide and carry through an experimental project from initiation to meaningful conclusion;
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and accountability;
  • Demonstrated ability to work and manage in a research group environment and prepare research results for publication and presentation at seminars and scientific meetings.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay;
  • This position will be hired at the level commensurate with qualifications and years of experience at the Staff Scientist or Senior Scientist level;
