Regulate a safer, greener future

About us

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment. Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife has never been more crucial, and it’s the overarching goal at the heart of everything we do. We’re responsible for regulating the disposal of radioactive waste across the whole of the nuclear industry in England, and our Nuclear Waste Assessors provide specialist technical advice and support as part of our regulatory capability.

About the role

As a Senior Nuclear Waste Assessor, you’ll be at the forefront of this work. From determining the suitability of proposals for managing and disposing of radioactive waste, to assessing the waste management for new reactor designs and new nuclear power stations, you’ll work collaboratively with a team ensuring nuclear waste is safely and securely managed for the good of people and the environment.

Acting as a source of expertise, you’ll provide technical input and evidence on everything from site regulation, to decommissioning and clean-up of non-operational facilities, to nuclear new build and new reactor designs. You’ll undertake or commission radiological assessments, evaluating, comparing, contextualising and interpreting monitoring results. Acting in a Senior capacity, you’ll lead on the specification of radiological monitoring contracts, managing contractors and providing expert input. Everything you do will put people and places first, and you’ll work in a cross-function capacity to support initiatives across our Nuclear Regulatory Group.

About you

An established professional educated to degree level in a science or engineering based subject, you’ll have significant experience in radioactive waste management and disposal. You’ll have worked in the nuclear industry – or another related sector – and have a sound understanding of environmental challenges and issues. With the demonstratable ability to assess and analyse technical proposals and safety cases for radioactive waste management and disposal, you’ll have experience of technical report writing, and of making decisions by assessing incomplete and disparate information.

On a personal level, you’ll be an effective communicator with good IT skills and a passion for environmental issues. The work we do increases access to nature, tackles climate change head on, and keeps the public safe. It also sets careers on unstoppable trajectories. Join us, and get excellent benefits, unrivalled career development opportunities, and a team dedicated to putting the planet first.
